Is this the right place to post??? So I traded an old truck and got this 67 cj 5. It is all stock with the excepyion of some new superlift springs. Has 3 speed 18 transfer closed knuckle front end with I think the 20 rear ???and the 225 Dauntless. I was going to leave stock but think I want to go 350/350 with 205 transfer case and different axles. Any opinions on where to start with this???? Axles??? thanks :v6:

Wow, if that's the one in the little picture, Id say all it needs is a driver! Haha, I would stick with the V6! To me most V8's in a CJ5 are just noise makers. CJ5's are relatively light to start, and adding big HP just makes them squirelly. Aside from that, a good compound low 4 speed and maybe a set of 44s for axles, but it all depends on what you intend to use it for.

Sounds like an interesting project but I suggest you get out your tape measure. The 350/350 will fit in an early but is tight. Add the 205 and you better be planning on stretching the wheel base quite a bit. Have to ask, why? what do you want the end result to be? What do you want to use it for? That will determine how to answer your questions.

I dont know what I would achieve, just asking questions to see what way to go. Think I would like to leave the v6 in it, it has a 3 speed in it now, that has to go, I want the 4 speed, and the transfer is a 20 I believe. As far as the front and rear end I want the 30 in the front and 44 in the back. Does this sound ok to those of you that know??? Your comments are appriciated, thank you.

If it's stock it would be an 18 transfer case with an offset ot the passenger side rear. Look at the transfer case rear output. 20 is inline with the transmission, 18 is offset to the passenger side and in line with the front output. I'd recommend driving it around and getting a feel for it before arbitrarily making changes. If you do decide to make changes get a game plan together and do lots of research. The things you've mentioned are not simple or cheap by any means.
Also, if stock it should have a 44 rear already, just not a flanged version. With the stock V-6 and if kept in good shape and maintained they hold up quite well.

Ok ya the transfer is an 18, the numbers on the rearend are C-32192-1 cant find the 44 numbers anywhere, maybe easier to find when I tear it appart. as far as the front it is a 27A is what it says. Do not know how to post pics so I need to figure that out

That's a great base to start with. It will have either 3.73(std) or 4.88s(opt) for axles if stock. You would be surprised what that rig can do, and if it's got the 4.88s, I believe it's the best pair to start with. You do need to decide what your going to do with it and then make a plan. We can help alot with sugestions once we know your direction.

FWIW - I am running the V6, SM465, D18 w/OD, D30 Front Disk, D44 Rear Full Fload 11" Drums, 4.88s, OX lockers (F&R), Saginaw PS... As you can tell, there is alot that can be done.

OK yes it has the 373 gears and it will be a pavement pounder. I have been afraid to say that because of ridicule, after all it is a jeep not a low rider. But I want to do a tear down and add some little tweaks like tilt wheel from a GM. It already has new 4 inch superlift springs all the way around. but for the main part it will leave it stock. All your help has been greatfull

If it's just gonna be a pavement pounder, I would rethink the 4 speed unless your going to a Muncie car type (I have one on a shelf). The cost of a truck 4 speed is about 1K and it's good for the low first gear as the top gear is the same as the 3 speed and most all other 4 speeds. If you want more top end, you need an OD on it.
