Warn Overdrive Fun

Well, I scored a couple of goodies today. Here's what I got:



I just spoke to Herm, who was more than helpful with my current situation. Once I get this figured out, I'm going to send him the drive to rebuild it. I ended up getting more than I needed to make one complete overdrive - however, I'm going to have to work for it. The bowl gear next to the overdrive is burned up. There is another one inside the Spicer 18, however, the PO removed the whole assembly, and now I have to reassemble it to pry it off. The main shaft from the transmission is still attached on the other side to. Fun stuff. Anyone have any tips, advice, snide remarks? Herm may be getting a full Spicer 18 if I don't get this worked out...

 

the bowl gear is held on by a reverse snap ring (looks like a cross), it can be removed with a 1/2inch drive extension.

Sometimes the pilot gets a little flattened on the end and makes the body difficult to pull, but it should come straight off there with the bolts out. A little carefull pry bar work required.

I really like my OD gives you alot more choices for gearing and I can go on the freeway. It can be frustrating sometimes trying to get the OD in. I learned some tricks that they do not tell you about. If you get in a bind when you put it in drop me a line. Good luck

 

all i can say is that you will love that overdrive. my jeep came with one, still have the 5:38 gears and a 350 sbc. i can go down the highway at 60 at around 1800 - 2000 rpm, no problem doing 70 or 80. they sure come in handy when four wheeling. believe they are good for 500 rpm.

 

Hopefully you have enough main shaft sticking out to be able to put it in a vise. I just pulled my OD yesterday and my electric impact gun wouldn't break the nut loose. I had to use a breaker bar with a cheater on it.

 

Well. My project it currently on hold. We're moving next week, so I'm doing more packing than anything else. Thanks to everyone for the tips. For the record, I put the housing back on. Someone tried to remove the overdrive by removing the big nut and bearing on the shaft, so I don't have the nut that fits over the main shaft - which is causing problems pulling the shaft out of the bowl gear. Hopefully I'll get to it in the next two weeks. The Jeep is my daily driver until we move - since we drove my car up and flew back a few weeks ago.

Next up - find a rebuilt f134 or a Dauntless that I can drop right in to replace this mess of a 305. Think it's gonna need a rebuild soon - low oil pressure once it warms up.
