    Good day all-

it looks like i am FINALLY going to start work on the beast again this weekend...

in case you dont already know, i have a 75 frame and 76 running gear...

what i DONT have, is the axle types that are underneath... the rear has the full moon diff cover ( i assume that is a 20) and the front also looks pretty non-decript... but i can provide a pic later...

it has the 3 speed (with a 4 to go in it eventually, IF i dont have to change the diff ratios) and i am unsure of the TC... i will look but i am sure there are no ID tags on it anymore...

it all APPEARS to be stock

    any idea whats under it?

i ll have more questions as time goes on... as i seem to have lost my memory on some of these things...

maybe now would be a good time to make a notebook

    TIA everyone

in 1976 amc start using their own axle the amc 20...what you discribe is a amc 20. In the front all cj from 1972 to 1986 have a dana 30 with drum or disq brake. For transmission you seen to have a t15 who was very commom with cj. For he t-case yo should have a dana 30 because quadratrac and dana 300 were use later on those model.

for ratios two thing to be sure...one is to open the axle case cover and look over the ring gear for number...
or jack front of the jeep and ask someone to count how many turn the drive shaft do while you do one complete turn of the wheel.

    What engine do you have?

The 76 will have a Dana 30 front, exactly like the D30 front found in the 72-75 version, so using it is a no-brainer. The rear will be an AMC20, which is not a direct bolt on replacement for the original D44 rear of the 75. The frame was widened in 76 and the spring perches are further apart than they were in 75. You can use it but you'll have to cut off the spring perches and move them.

The three speed transmission in 76 would be a T-150 and the transfer case is the same Dana 20 that was used from 72-79.

If the trans came from a '76, it's a T-150, not a T-15. If the trans came from a '75, it will be a T-14 or T-15, depending on which engine it was used with.

The T-150 is a good transmission - made by Tremec on license from Ford, it's a Ford passenger car transmission reworked to accept a transfer case. http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/t150.html

The transfer case for either year is the Dana 20.

good to know bout the spring perches, thanks for the info!

ALL of the running gear is from a 76... looks like i ll need to move the perches...

any indication as to how difficult it will be?

i guess i could bolt up the springs and see where they fall on the axles, mark the locations and get new ones to weld on (no plasma cutter in my garage )

seems that would be the easiest route... and i have seen them for sale in some of the rags that i get..

maybe i ll make some progress without moving the perches... i was SO excited to get started too.... @#^$%!

any suggestions on a place to get them?

    they're 2 5/8" right?

You'll either have to move the perches (pads), install new pads and leave to old ones in place, or outboard the spring mounts from the frame. The '76 and later frame spreads out in the rear, unlike the earlier frames.

Shouldn't be hard to figure out where the pads should be. Measure the hanger center width on the frame, compare that to the hangers on the axle, and move each pad in by half the difference. Use a spirit level or angle finder to put the new pads at the same angle as each other and the old pads. Hire a good welder to anchor them.
