Intermediate CJ Dana 30 differences

Is there a difference between the 72/73 CJ front ends and the 74/75 CJ front ends?

A question has come up regarding parts stores listing a different inner axle seal (the ones on both side of the carrier) for 72/73 VS 74/75. The stores list the common Dana 30 timken inner axle seal that works with every Dana 30 up to 86 for the 74/75 CJ. They list the seal that works with the old Dana 27 (71 or older CJ) for the 72/73 Dana 30. Is that correct or is the parts store wrong? Did 72/73 CJs come with an open knuckle Dana 27?

There's no such thing as an open Dana 27. 72/73 have the open Dana 30, just like the 74/75.

 

That is what I though. So is the inner seal (Timken 710086) the same on a 72/73 vs the 74 and up?

from 1972 to 1986 same seal and bearing...only spindle change depend if you have drum ou disq brake on the dana 33

 

Yes, the seal is the same for Jeep Dana 30's from '72-'86.
