I have a 74 CJ5 that I recently picked up. It was a running Jeep when I got, needed a tune up and new exhaust, but ran well. I changed the plugs, oil, and topped off the fluids and now it wont start. I get nothing, no clicking or anything. I have tried jumping it from another vehicle and no change. I have charged the battery thinking it might have been low, but still nothing. Then, after reading through posts I assume it is a bad ground.

What is the best way to ground the system. Currently it goes from (-) battery to block, then block to firewall. Is that right? I dont think I disturbed anything will I was messing with it the other day. If anybody has pictures of how they have done theirs or an easy explanation it would be appreciated. I am not the most gifted mechanic/electrician and need all the help I can get. Thanks guys.

I'll assume you have cleaned the terminals and battery posts and cleaned the ends of the bat cables where they attach to the solenoid and block.
Start by running a ground wire from the starter solenoid mount to battery(-)
If the key switch is functioning and the wiring from it is intact, even a weak battery should get the solenoid to click.
If it still doesn't at least click, start looking for power to and from the ignition switch.

Yes, all connections have been cleaned. Thought that at first. I will try what you suggested tomorrow.

Get a piece of wire and jump it from the small "S" terminal on the starter solenoid to the battery "+" to see if the starter solenoid is good. Make sure the solenoid has a good ground from the mounting bolts to the fender and fender to the negative of the battery.

Bad ignition switch is another possibility.

Try using a jumper cable from the (+) battery terminal to the big starter cable post on the solenoid (Careful! Out of gear, wheels chocked, hands and tools clear. Engine will crank and could start). The starter motor should run. If the starter runs, you probably have a bad solenoid (most likely) or a bad ignition switch (less likely) or a broken wire or connection (least likely).

Thanks for the input guys, I am going to go ahead and pickup a new solenoid since they are cheap. I am also going to replace the battery cables and grounds. I will report back.
