    Howdy,

It has been quite a while since I have been here, but I really have a question that is holding me up on the build. When rebuilding the rear end I ended having to cut/grind a hub off (see here http://chriskoym.blogspot.com/ ) because the axle shaft key had been shoved too far into the hub for it to be removed. Now that I am putting it all back together I am noticing that the key does not want to slide into the hub/axel. When I took it apart one shaft key came out easily, and I assume that was the proper fit.

Should I just drive the key in? It looks as if the brakes could be serviced with the hub in place.
Should I file the hub down until the key slides in and out with ease?

I really want to do this the right way.

    Best,

    Chris

Check the axle, hub, and key for burrs. You shouldn't have to drive the key in. light taps ok but not drive in. Make sure the tapered end goes towards the axle, not toward you when installing. Also, lightly install the hub, use the key to line it up, then install the key.

I have always used a points file to work the key and keyway to make the key just slide in with a little force on my fingers. Always worked well, and once torqued, I never had a failure. One took me years of fiddling with it to get it 'just so' each time I had it off for work.

Thank you all for your help. I got them on a diet and they are not slim enough to fit.
