Dual tanks and how to use them

I'm adding a rear tank to my jeep and keeping the front tank to either use as an aux fuel or I'm more leaning towards a water tank for showers. Any thoughts good or bad

 

use as aux., heck I'd keep them both full, my Jeep seams to run out of gas all the time.

 

I use both for fuel. It gives you some good range , plus 2 jerry cans on the back.

Fuel, definitely. You can always use a larger fuel capacity.

Turning over that much space for something like bathing water seems way too specialized to me. I'd get a solar shower - you don't need a lot of water to bathe, and it does not have to be strictly potable water for hair and body washing - unpurified stream or lake water is fine, or rinse water from dishwashing. I could go on, but you can figure out the details. Be careful about what soap you use and don't dump soapy water in small streams or ponds.

Water is heavy (8 lbs per gallon) so backpackers go to extreme lengths to limit water usage. But you can get some good ideas for managing water when Jeep camping from them.

 

I'd also say fuel for the under seat tank. One, you can never have too much fuel, and two, you'll never get the fuel smell out of the tank which means your water will smell like gas, even if faintly. This would mean a new tank for under seat. Mike Boyink put a water tank in his CJ-6 years ago under the seat and it was very cool. He had a larger capacity tank under the rear iirc though.

 

Sounds like fuel is the ticket so if that's the case how did you guys plumb your in? Valve to switch or just connected?

 

You need a valve to switch between tanks. Up to you how fancy you want to get. You can install a manual valve to switch between the tanks, and run the smaller tank dry before you switch. Or you can switch the guage and the valve between both tanks.

You can also just run a transfer pump from the second tank to the main tank. When the main goes low, pump fuel from the second into the main, with a el cheapo electric transfer pump.
