I'm getting down to the nitty gritty on the 67 CJ5 to make it road worthy. First thing first - I'm not doing a restoration, just making it drivable/play-able. Since the 67 came with belts, I have to have them... So the question is - do I just buy new seat belts or get new webbing on the old ones? Anyone have any idea how much I'd be looking at for the webbing cost? I have the original lowback seats, but the roll bar has a mount for a three point harness. Should I spurge and get that? Here's what I'm working with now:

If you are going to stay with lap belts, my vote is to get the webbing replaced and keep the uber cool buckles. You don't see those everyday and even though you are not doing a restoration they will add something that aftermarket replacements just won't have.

If you want 3 points they are available and will strap you to the wreckage, I mean keep you in the jeep should you get in an accident. If you could find a custom seat belt guy I would see about getting those buckles integrated into a 3 point system.

If you decide to ditch the lap belts, post 'em up in the classifieds, I'm sure somebody here would love to have them.

    R) Hmm. I've seen Howard's pictures of Tonka. On, that note, think I'll go with getting the lap belts redone, even though I have a roll bar... I definitely dig the old logo on them. I spent several hours getting the rust off them last night, which was a blast...

If you go with replacement belts, please sell the buckles don't scrap them. I would be interested in them.

those buckles are it. I would get the webbing. one thing about the harness, I have one and never use all of it. it's kind of a hassle unless you really need one. I had my jeep tuned (horribly at that) at a shop and when I was leaving, I drove by the guy, he must have seen how I was wearing the belt because he says, HEY, just so you know, you can get a ticket for wearing your harness like that. improper usage.... I had it on with only one shoulder strap. something to think about or look into. With the full harness on, you are straped in, just try and reach the dash with your hand.

I have a set like that out of a '67 Tux, that I used for awhile, but I just didn't trust the buckles any longer. They never felt like they latched securely. Probably due to age/ wear/ dirt.

Done. Seat belts mailed to Sharon's Web, Inc. in Hawkins, TX for repair. Spoke with her on the phone today, and said it would be no problem to get them all fixed up. Going to get all new webbing, and the buckles restored and dipped in chrome. Sweet. Can't wait to see them! As for now - installing $15 Autozone lap belts to hold me over.

I have the same belts and i just took them out for a set of 3 pt belts i bought new. 4wheel hardware and $150 for the pair. Had the post welded in above the shoulder and it feels much more secure than the originals. Those buckles are great but after 44 years they just did not hold very well. I need to think of something to do with them now to keep the logo in use. My wife will now ride in the jeep since I have created the illusion of safety with the 3pt belts. i do think it adds more safety.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I hate and always have hated the crap they instal in automobiles and have since the '80's. I don't mind a shoulder belt, but that locking you into place and jerking your left (driver) or right (passenger) shoulder back at any and every little bump is the pits as far as I am concerned. My belts are the air-liner style lift to open latch style. (never really did trust the push button style - and have never had to cut one of the lift to open styel so some one could get outa the car and can't cause the seat belt won't release) If I replace them then that four point style at http://wescoperformance.stores.yahoo.net/am4point.html is what I would go for.

I have seen the tabs welded on the inside of the gate and the buckle welded to the inside of the wheel house to latch the tailgate, They would also make a sweet jerry can strap.
