I'm planning to remove the PTO and it's associated components from my recently purchased Jeep. I'm sure someone out there would be interested in it for their restoration but I have no idea what is a fair price. Would anyone know what such a unit in operating condition is worth? I don't expect top dollar, I just don't want to be taken advantage of.

Here's a link to a photo of the rear bumper mounted unit. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c318/champ81L/Jeep/Rear_PTO_2.jpg

    Thanks for your help!

Do you have the PTO drive that bolts to the transfer case? How about the driveshaft?

If you have the transfer case pto, the drive shaft, and that gear box, and are in good shape, they generally start at $350 and go up from there. About 8 or so years ago I had one I purchased at a swap meet, cleaned it up and painted it, and people were almost fighting over it for $350 plus shipping. They were used like yours but in good shape.

Nickmil - Thanks for the info - that gives me a place to start.
Colojeepguy - yeah, I have the whole shebang and it's all coming off. I just need to find a plate and gasket to cover the opening in the transfer case.

I briefly considered hooking my six foot Woods mowing deck behind it and mowing a piece of my runway with it...thought it would make a great picture. Then sanity returned and I decided not to mess with it. The mower is designed for a three point hitch so I would have had to cobble something together.

Novak makes a bling cover, or I'm sure one of us on the site have extra ones. I would be interested in your PTO setup if and when you decide to sell it!

I'm definitely going to sell it. I just haven't listed it yet nor have I removed anything from the jeep except the PTO shaft. I'll also be removing the drawbar that hangs below the rear PTO - I don't know if that was an integral part of the original setup or not but I'd include it if the buyer wanted it. I have a long tube to ship the PTO shaft but the rest might better go in a plywood crate. The cost of shipping would be the responsibility of the buyer.

I'm going to a "gathering" this weekend where there is a fellow to whom I've given first right of refusal. If he doesn't want it I'll keep you guys in mind. It may be a few weeks before I remove all the pieces.

    Thanks again for the info.

Why when so many folks want a pto setup would you not want your's? it's one of the things that set an old Jeep off from the rest and makes it unique! Makes your Jeep more valuable as well! Just interested.

My Jeep is far from an original CJ5 - the PO removed the body and installed it on a newer Jeep. Mine has the body of a 1952 M38A1 so I have decided to restore it as an "Army" Jeep. Truthfully, since it doesn't fit my theme and I have no practical use for it, I thought the PTO & hardtop would be far better in the hands of someone who could use it to produce a authentic restoration of an early CJ5. I may have regrets down the road, but at this point I think I've made the best choice considering what I have to work with.

Tim I paid $400 for the pto when I got it. It was a number of years ago for the complete setup. Unfortunatly I don't have the cover plate anymore.

in case he didn't introduce himself,
    Tim bought Wimpy from me.

I just saw termin8ed's post.... yeah, I Wimpy has moved a bit farther north in Michigan. His former owner has been a big help as have the folks on this group and others I've been checking in on. I'm really impressed with the Jeep community and having a good time working on Wimpy. Time will tell where it takes me.

I did find a cover plate on a parts Jeep I bought and the PTO is completely off now. Waiting to hear back from one guy before I know if I'm going to list it.
