Steps to start a jeep that has been sitting without gas tank

I have been doing some frame and suspension work and have had the tank out of my 74 for about a month. What is the appropriate way to get everything started again when I get the tank back in it?

I figured that I will put a couple (2-4) gallons of fuel back in the tank. Will I need to prime the carb with some gas before I get to cranking? I also figured that I would have the battery charged on the bench before I started cranking. I have a spare that I can make sure is charged also in case I need to use it also.

Is this the appropriate time to replace my inline fuel filter? Or should I get the engine turned over and the fuel line primed first?

    Thanks for the help guys.

throw the new filter on now.
I installed a new fuel system complete. Tank, hard lines, pump, carb, everything. Put a jerrycan's worth in it, and cranked it for 5-10 seconds, tops, before it fired up.

If the fuel lines have been left open might be a good idea to remove the line up front and blow back through it. Those little mud dauber like wasps have a nasty habit of stuffing open lines with mud, paralyzed little bug critters, laying an egg then sealing it all up. And they're quick about it too .

Thanks for the advice. Turned over on the third crank. Everything is running smooth except I have a fuel leak at the sending unit. Timgr suggested that I probably had the o-ring misaligned. I will have to check it out.

Can anyone explain what they are doing with the second fuel line coming out of a replacement sending unit? My old one and the OEM according to the TSM, just had a single fuel line out. Right now I have a short rubber hose, stopped with a 5/16" bolt plugged onto this second line out.

    I'd use a rubber cap - http://www.mcmaster.com/#rubber-end-caps/=dmwr5z

You can get an assortment package of these (sold as vacuum caps) at the parts store.

Most of these Jeeps have a return line from the fuel filter that connects to that extra nipple. Fuel then circulates continuously from the tank, through the pump to the filter, and excess goes back to the tank.

Do these go on over the OD of the line or do they go in the ID of the line?
