Another Outboarding/Shackle Reversal Question...I'm just trying to confirm.

First of all, I am a newbie to this work…be kind. I know there are a ton of websites and links about this…I’ve tried to read all and want to make sure I’m doing it correctly. (I would like verification.)

    Background Info:
I am no longer going to use the original frame, but now I have a Commando frame that I will be using for my '61 CJ-6. I will be using Scout axles (or similar), so I will need to outboard my front springs, which are used 4” lift YJ springs. I will go SUA. I would also like to do a shackle reversal because I want better on-road handling. I have acquired ‘76+ rear spring hangers and shackle hangers to try to use, instead of fabricating my own.

    Getting to my Questions:
Question 1: Researching online, I see that the springs need to be about even, front to back. Since the front of the frame goes up about 4” or so, do I need to have the front spring hanger drop down about 4-5” then the spring hanger mounted? (I believe I do.) I have seen this mentioned a couple of times, but not always. I have also seen many pictures online where people don’t drop the front spring hanger those many inches. Does it really matter that much?

Question 2: Is moving the front spring hanger 1” forward enough to cover the axle moving back?

Question 3: Are there any good pictures of the front setup on an EARLY CJ? (Most pictures online are newer jeeps or from far away.)

I appreciate your help. I just like to make sure I am going down the right path and won't screw up too badly. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

this is my build thread and I linked you at the point I started the shackle reversal.....
1.....my mounts were about the same for the front springs
2....think mine was closer to 2", the more the better
    3....see thread
keep in mind it's VERY important to make sure mounts are square withe the frame.......and your gonna need a long travel front driveshaft to keep from slamming it into the TC with catastrophic results

Thanks for the info! Your pictures and comments on your build definitely helped. I'm going to see just what I can do or if I just want to skip the SR and only do the outboarding.

Want to help me build my CJ-6? I'll give you a CJ-5.
    :)

just a note on the SR....I've heard the pros and cons, but I would do it again in a heart beat.....I can cruise 70mph with my knee on the wheel no problem, a little nose dive on hard braking but it doesn't bother me at all

I agree, the only other issue is ensuring you have enough slip joint in the front driveshaft. I did one on a YJ frame, and had a lot more fore and aft movement of the front axle. Ended needing a 12" slip joint in the front driveshaft, which was pricey, but the SRS sure improves on road feel and off road obstacle climbing. Folks may debate that either way, it's like the debate of automatics vs manuals.

I know of a few other people that highly recommend the SR. They drive newer CJs, though, and bought the MORE kit. Ok...you talked me back into it. I will try to figure it out.

Another question...since doing the SR raises the front (I assume), did you raise the rear at all? Or am I wrong and there is no extra lift?

    Thanks!

And maybe I can find someone in Colorado Springs to help me build this CJ-6 for a CJ5. Perhaps Warloch. ;-) or maybe I'll sell the -5 to help pay for my wedding (or buy jeep parts).

It an raise the front, but it doesn't have to.
It all depends on how you place your hangers/sprinng mounts.
