yesterday after work i glanced down at my voltage meter and noticed it was spiked at about 18 volts!!! i turned on my headlights for a little draw and it droped a little but not much. So I am guessing my voltage regulator has gone bad. Has anyone found a suitable replacement at places like chief auto or kragen? or do I need to order the exact replacement from one of the online guys?
    Thanks for the help.

    Year and equipment would help.

Any auto parts store will sell you a regulator. I don't think there's any such thing as a "generic" voltage regulator - it will always be matched to your application. Parts stores usually have an alternator tester too.

When my regulator went south I upgraded to a Delco CS 130 . Better charge at lower RPMs.

A battery with very low water will do the same thing (read high).
