After reading through the various post I am a little confused. I have a Dana 44 centered, flanged rear axle ( i took them out of a 68 Commando). were all flanged axles 30 spline or did some have the dreaded 27 spline shafts? I would just pull them apart to check, but they are way in the back of what I lovingly refer to as "deep storage" Thanks Jerry

All the same. Only the tapered axle 44 were different.

    Some of the commando 44's had 27 spline shafts (67 '& 68').

Yup. I can't confirm what years but there were flanged 44's used in Jeepster Commando's with 27 spline

First I've heard of that. There were no flanged 44's used before 70, they were tapered, 27 spline and used from maybe late 68 to early 70.

Are you sure those 27 spline diffs. are 44's? some 67 and 68 Jeepsters came with Dana 30 rear diffs. If it is a 30 check for a Powr-lok as this was suppose to be a dealer fix for rearend breakage.

Yes, I'm sure it was a 44. I've custom built enough 44 housings to tell the difference.

Digging this one out of the archives, I wanted to double check as I have someone looking for a narrow track centered 44 and I have 2 sitting under my 70 and 71 Commandos. I know they are flanged, but I wanted to double check that they are 30 spline 1 piece axles.

It seems pretty clear here, but I don't want to sell him something without knowing for sure.

    If they're flanged they'll be 30 spline.

    Won't be a 27, all flanged Jeepster 44's were 30, only tapered 44 were 37.

I would still double check. Like I said, I pulled 27 spline flanged axles and a Powerlock from a Jeepster 44. Maybe someone switched them at some time. Who knows? But it definitely was flanged and 27 spline.

The Spicer BOM shows 27 spline only for the tapered 44 axle on the Jeepster delivered from 67 to 69.

I want to convert my Dana 44 tapered axle to flanged. Been looking all over the net for a kit and can't find anything. Lots of information, but no source for parts.
Any one know where one is available?

This from the Off Road Jeepster forum, no idea if they still do it or not it's an 8 year old post, worth a try--

"Here's an interesting tidbit I came across yesterday in March '03 issue of Four Wheeler in Willy Worthy's Techline section. For those that have tapered Dana 44 rear axles, Summers Brothers in Ontario, CA, (Ph. 909-986-2041), "has a flanged axle kit that eliminates the failure-prone tapered keyway axle and hub that you have. It comes in 19- and 30-spline versions. To use either the 19- or 30-spline axles, you will have to change the side (axle) gears in the differential to match, but this isn't a big problem. If you're ordering up a new locking differential, you can upgrade to the much stronger 30-spline piece."

Might talk to Scott Milliner. He tried that conversion and had lots of issues. He eventually switched to a full float axle conversion and never looked back....
