I just had some leaks in my radiator fixed and while I was at it I replaced the thermostat with a 160. Driving around, the temp is anywhere from 170 to 200. I pulled in my driveway and shut it off. Started tinkering with things and after about 5 mins I noticed the temp had crept up to 230. I started the engine and held it at high idle to cool it back down to 200. What's a safe temp for these engines? It was 118 degrees outside (Phoenix) when this happened so I know that doesn't help. I also pulled an electric fan from a Ford Taurus yesterday that I plan on installing in front of the radiator. I'm just concerned about the operating temp and the temp after it shuts down. Thanks for any input.

My rule of thumb is 220° max. I'd like to see it <210°

Any rise in temp after shut down is normal.
If you think about it, air flow and water flow don't exist with engine off.
The coolant has to absorb the heat.

Yep. I can shut mine off @ ~190-195° and the fan will sometimes, depending on ambient temperature, come on 5 or more minutes later (set to come on @ 200°)

Thanks for the input guys. I realize when the engine isn't running the heat can creep up but I was a little surprised to see 230. I was gonna wire the fan up with a switch/relay but maybe I'll do as was mentioned and wire in a temperature switch that I can override manually.
