Can sometimes find the # cast into the base of the body, underneath the grime.

These distributors are not the same.
So almost no parts will interchange.
The earlier one is an IAD 4008 the later is an IAY 4401.

Regardless of casting number the components generally are not interchangable.
The unit as a whole can be interchanged.
Willys use 4 basic designs. IGW IAD IAT and IAY types.

IGW the earliest has a very small distribitor cap. (circa 1941 to 1945)
IAD is the dustproof design having the largest cap (circa 1945 to 1954)
IAY is the last design with slightly smaller cap than IAD (circa 1954 to 1972)(became Prestolite in the early 1960's)
IAT can be similar to either IAD or IAY but always with vaccum advance (circa 1947 to 1964)
There are several different versions of the IAT's and the IAY's
CJ's never used the IAT's (vacuum advance)

F-134 CJ5/6 only used the IAY types IAY 4041 or IAY 4401
