Hello, I have a 60 CJ5 F134 (semi-stock)...I replaced the clutch on my CJ5 and got it in and works great...Only thing is now is that I can't seem to get the transfer case to engage into 4wd.....the Transmission was pulled off with the T-case on never separated the t-case from the tranny when replacing the clutch...I have locked the front hubs as well to try to get it to engage...but still nothing...It was working great before I replaced the clutch.........Any suggestions....:coffee:

What do you mean by not engaging? Can you physically move the shift lever from the 2WD to the 4WD position? If so, with the hubs unlocked, you should be able to turn the front driveshaft by hand while in the 2WD position. In the 4WD position, the driveshaft will be engaged to the transfer case and you should not be able to turn it by hand. If it passes that test, then your problem lies in the front axle or hubs.

    1. Yes, I can physically move the Lever in and out of 2wd- 4wd..
    2. I'll try turning the drive When I get home tonight... (Most likely I think it will turn..)
    3. If that passes, regarding the hubs, One thing I forgot to mention is that I replaced the seal to the front axle as well and the Hi-Lo lever now engages without being in 4wd...I'm thinking the poppett ball must have moved or something.....sorry for leaving this info out..

    Thank you for replying back!..:coffee:...

Did you by chance leave the Hi-Lo lever in the neutral position?

No I didn't....I just did what colojeepguy wrote and it appears to have worked...But i still need to test drive it and really find out if it does work...That will be tomorrow....should I have tried it with the Hi-Lo lever in neutral?....Just wondering....

Well, I took it out for spin this evening and engaged the 4wd but it still doesn't seem like it is engaged..Not like before when you could tell when it was engaged...I used to feel the steering different when engaged in 4wd...:?....

Thanks in advance for viewing and replying to this post!...:)

I only ask because I had one of the kids kick my tc in neutral one day.. But that acts just like the clutch went. Nothing at any of the wheels.

Not sure on your last reply regarding "noting on wheels"...however; everything seem the same..meaning that I still don't know if the 4WD is engaging when when I try it...any other suggestions.....

What I meant was the engine would rev, the tranny gear lever would go into gear, but the wheels would not turn. That is what happens if someone kicks the far right lever in to the neutral position. At night it can be quite bothersome.

put the whole jeep up on jackstands, start her up , stick her in 1st with the transfer case in 4hi, and watch the wheels. They should all turn at the same speed in the forward direction. Or just the front end up put the lever in 4hi and try to rotate one of the wheels on the front. If the transfer case in engaging like it should the wheel on the other side will turn in the other direction. if it isn't engaging the other wheel won't rotate at all.

Thank you for replying, I wasn't sure what you meant by the wheels but yes that has happened to me before not having the Hi-Lo lever in position...I'll try that recommendation on placing the wheels on jack-stands and turning them with the 4WD in Hi... :)..

Another option: Just go to an asphalt parking lot, make a tight circle in 2wd, stop, lock the hubs, and shift into 4wd and make another loop. The difference should be noticeable, open diffs or not.

Thank you for that recommendation, I'll try that too..however; my turning radius is short due to my tires being a little wide...I don't know if that will make a difference in trying to get the wheels to do what it needs to do....As you mentioned, the difference that I should notice should be the steering a little awkward...Correct?....:?....That's what it felt before when I could get the 4WD to engage...

Well, I've got the 4wd to engage now....:)......I believe all suggestions that I tried worked and the one turning in a circle then locking the hubs and engaging the 4wd probably did the trick...:)....I really appreciate all the replies and suggestions mentioned.......:coffee:....:tea:....

once again, Thanks for the advice....

some hubs im not sure about the newer warns . have a spring that engages the hub inside so you may be able to turn the dial easy but inside its just compessing the spring instead of pushing in the engagement ring. So yea you might want to investigate that
