Don't need a lift with the 31s. Any bigger you would.

Yes they fit fine, when flexed up the rear will rub on the sides of the tub, just make sure that area is smooth before wheeling. Haven't had any problems with the front rubbing the springs or fenders.

I've got 31x10.5 on my stock 8" rims and they work fine. Exact same as you're describing. Click button below to see a pic.

I am currently running 33"s with stock springs and a shackle lift. minor rubbing in the rear is all I have noticed. However this weekend the 33's are coming off and will be for sale and I am putting 31's on. The only reason the 33's coming off is to put money in the jeep fund and to make life easier for the 35 year old jeep. Ultimately I want to go with 16" wheels and 31-32" tires.

31's will fit for you no problem.

I have 30x9.50 on 5.5" wide rims, and the rancho replacement springs which may be up to 1" lift (I couldn't tell a difference, but my original spring packs had been messed with by the PO).
I like to push things off road (although I only run 30", I do have lockers front and rear and the T18 ) and I have had some rubbing on the rear wheelwells when flexed up (as mentioned by willysnut). In my case I am sure 31"s on 7" wide rims would be even worse. I have thought about using some angle steel to reinforce the lower edge where the tire rubs (saw that on a tech tip in a magazine, specifically talking about early Jeeps). Also could lower the bumpstops I guess. I also would like to run 31s. Not sure about fitting them on my 5.5" rims though. I have some aluminum 7" rims waiting in the wings but don't really want to go to that style.
I would say go for it and live with a little rubbing (if it does it, and only when really crossed up off road).
