Have you looked at the Novak site? www.novak-adapt.com

Can't change to a D20 without swapping to a centered rear axle. The drive line angle will be too large.

The TH350 is a good choice, but you're going to have to spend some money. There's no junkyard conversion to an automatic other than a TH400, which again gets into drive line angle issues.

why are you wanting to get away from the T-14? You can get a new rebuilt one very easily

What are you wanting to do with the Jeep? Rock Crawling? Street driver? Mud? Many, many options out there but they all are going to cost some money. If you want stronger I'd suggest a BW T-18, SM-465, or the like if you want to keep a manual trans. A T-15 could be an option as well. Much stronger than the T-14 but it is not a direct bolt in. Some modifications must be made.

    Budget is always a concern.

There's no stronger transmission that will just drop in. The T-15 is the closest to a T-14 with a significant upgrade in strength. But you'll need to buy or make an adapter. http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_1415.htm

If you find a T-15, you will need a 6-spline output gear that matches your Dana 18. You can pick the right output gear from this chart. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transfer_case_gears_grid.htm

IMO it would not be better to switch to a Dana 20.

switch to a dana 20 you will have to switch rear ends to a center diff as well. and the dana 18 has a lower low range

I agree with Tim. For your use, do the T15 and keep the D18-also likely the cheapest route. I have never seen the D20 as much of an improvement over the D18 (even before my hearing loss R)). Really not that much stronger (if any) and you have a much steeper driveshaft angle. No provision for an OD either and if still stock, the D20 low range is 2.0:1 compared to the 2.46:1 for the 18.

If I did not want to spend a lot of cash and I wanted something I could start and finish in a weekend I would just toss another t-14 in there.

A working one can be found for like $50 used. Get a rebuild kit for like $100 and then pay someone(who knows what they are doing and has the right tools) like $100 to do a bench rebuild. Slap it all back together(great time to do the clutch if it is worn) and be happy with your rebuilt trans for the next.

You are going to spend more then 200 between adapters and drive shaft mods putting a different model trans in there.

Of course this is the "without spending a paycheck on this thing" approach.

My t-14 is getting pulled taken apart/rebuilt a few times for fun/learning then will be scraped, given away, or turned into something like a mailbox etc.

He stated he wanted a stronger transmission which he won't get with another t-14. In many areas a v-6 t-14 are almost unobtanium. Especially since no one makes quality replacement input gears and cluster gears anymore
