I've finally got around to working on my flatty again and am to the point again where I want to mount my motor. I've read and reread the directions from novak and don't understand how to set the downward angle of the engine. Is that done by dropping the trans/t-case lower, or welding in the mounts at the angle they recommend? One last question does anybody have a side profile picture of how high the engine sits in the motor compartment.

    Thanks in advance, Don

I think the discussion comes down to what the desired driveshaft angle is. As you note, the angle of the engine will be set by both the position of the motor mounts and the crossmember spacing and/or design. When I put the sbc in the 3B, I ended up trying to guess the squat on the rear springs with the body and anticipated load from roll bar etc. I didn't like my first attempt and lowered the motor about 1.5" and spaced the cross member down 0.5" after it was all together. The crossmember spacers are easy but modifiying the motor mounts gets a bit more envolved.

My philosophy is to keep the motor as low as possible-better center of gravity, and more hood clearence for the air cleaner. It also factors into mounting a brakebooster on the firewall in a flatty. Not near the room of a CJ5/6.

Not sure this helps any, but this is a scanned photo from 1975-where mine ended up-and remains very close too, even though about everything in the photo has been replaced in the intervening decades.

the intake manifold carb mount needs to be close to level so the float in the carb works properly.if you mount it to low you run into front driveshaft to starter issues.driveline angles may be adjusted with tapered shims at the mount on the leaf spring.

I used stock CJ5 motor mounts with a stock cross member and 3/4" spacers to lower it a bit. The main thing to watch is top of transfer case and underside of body. should be at least 1/2".

    I'll go stretch a tape...

Ok, For reference, front to back on the inner frame there are two large hole on the sides. If you take the front of the rear hole and drew a line across to the other frame rail it would line up with the front tabs of the motor mounts where the bolt goes threw.

The center line of those bolts (the ones that bolt the motor mounts to the frame mounts) line up with the top of the frame, or very close if you drew a line across form frame rail to frame rail.

I used a stock transmission cross member and modified it a bit for my T-18 conversion (cut off a little on one side and added it to the other to move it over a bit). I went with the novak adapter and ended up using the stock drive shafts with no modifications.
The measurement form the bottom of the frame rails to the bottom of the parking brake drum is 5 1/4". This setup has worked great for me, I haven't had any issues is 15 years.
