Our Jeep had an "F" head and is getting a dauntless engine. Trying to figure out which trans to use. Original engine was a "F" head w/a "short shaft" t90 trans (6 spline main shaft) and a D18 transfer case with a Warn OD.

Plan "A" is to use a T86 trans (from a 225) with the original D18 transfer case, so I could continue using the OD...Herm says the T86 mainshaft also has 6 splines..but I need to check the bearing size to see if a bearing adapter is needed.

    Plan "B"...
Jim (aka jplat2a) suggests that I use the original t90 and replace the existing short shaft w/a long shaft..I would also have to get an adapter to mate it to 225.

Guess the question is,,,is the t90 stronger or more reliable than a T86? Jim advised it will be tough to get parts for the T86. IN either case, I'll get the rebuild kit so I start "fresh".

Mcruff or nickmil, I would appreciate your thoughts.

    Jim, Thanks for your input...

Why not a T-14? Should bolt right up.

    L head meathead! ;)

If we can find the longer input shaft for the T-90, that's the way to go! Anyone Anyone? I know that piece costs an arm and a wiener through AA. Any spare T-90 adapters out there as well??

I thought the T86 is just a T90 with a beveled (?) first gear. Quieter, but no stronger.

...but then his current overdrive won't work
would have to get the one for T14, 10 spline IIRC

Check with Herm or R&P for the longer input shafts and used adapters. Should run about $35 or so for the T90 adapter used.

    Believe a T18 has a granny grear. Since I have 5.38 axles, don't assume I need a granny grear.

Heard alot about the GM SM420 trans. Would also need to spend the $400-ish bucks for the conversion kit. The little birdie on my shoulder is singing "cheap..cheap...cheap"

T-90 is stronger than the t-14
A T-90 is not a super strong tranny though. As long as you do not run any bigger than 31 inch tires-- a t-14 or t-90 that is in average condition is OK for strength.

I did a T-90 with an adaptor I got on e-bay for 25 dollars. I have to get a long input shaft though and change the cluster gear. While I was at it I put a new second gear in the t-90 and new bearings.--- And did the D-18 new bearings and new intermediate shaft bearing/shaft. I did the tranny/t-case rebuilds and adapter for about 240 dollars. If I did an sm420 I would have spent a total of about 700 dollars.
I too am short on $$$ due to the current state of the economy-- and I am forced to start a new career-- return to college and all that stuff.

    A T-18 has grandma gear
An sm420 has a lower grandma gear-- but again $$ sm420 is super strong-- is heavy
and noisy--- but if you really need a low grandma its the way to go. I ran them in trucks and even put one in a Nissan 4x4 behind a Buick V6.

It all depends on what you are going to do with the Jeep.

    Its nice to have choices!
It will make a big change and improvement to do a Buick V6 over a 4 banger no matter what kind of tranny you do!

Personally - I like the long nose T-90 (though I do have one with a T-14). Even use it behind small V8's (up to @ 304) but think it is best if it stays with the V6's. If your doing a Flatty most of the time you will only need to change the motor mounts as keeping the T-90 means the cross members don't have to move.

T-90 - D18 - Warn OD is what I have in all but the one with a T-14... Nice, easy to work on, cheap parts are available.
