33x9.5 or 33x12.5

    i think of making some changes to my cj6 but iam not sure:?

    33x9.5-15 with no flares
    or
    33x12.5-15 with flares

    I run 33x12.50's on mine but have to run spacers to keep the tires out of the fenders. But I do like them! I'm not much flares myself.

    I like the look with no flares, but if you drive the Jeep much, I find flares almost mandatory, unless you don't drive in rain, snow, or mud.

    I like the 33x12.5's myself for aesthetics, floatation, and stability. I'd let useage be your guide though as there are situations where narrower is better.

    Tuff call looks wise. I do like a thinner tire though, and really 9.5" is still wide compared to what was stock. I'd go with a really aggressive narrow tire.

    I always go with the narrow tire look.
    Tall and skinny has all the advantages except in deep soft sand.
    I'm going to guess that there are not too many dunes in austria

    Not to throw another option at you but I run the 33 x 10.5's and to me it is the perfect compromise and tire size for an old jeep. I ran 33 x 9.5's and like the 10.5 width better. And the 12.5 rubs and is heavier. 33 x 10.5 is my vote, no flares.

    I normally dont like the skinnier tires, but I like the look of those on your jeep. Maybe its the bead-locks. If you drive on the street alot I would go with the 33-9.50's on the 8-15inch rim myself. I ran 33-12.50's on a 8inch rim, disconnected the sway bar, while flexing the suspension and making a sharp turn, ran the brand new tire into the bolt on the sway-bar and KO-BOOM.
    If you wheel your jeep and go with the 33-12.50's I would look into getting 10 inch rim. The tire should tell you the recomended rim size on the side wall.

    Couple things from my perspective. I run 33x9.50 muds. No flares (don't like em). Even off roading, I don't get real dirty with no flares. I like my skinny boots. I had 12.50's on it years ago and made a mess on the rig even with flares. Maybe wheel offset has something to do with it. I like the look of the 9.50's and no flares but am considering 10.50s for the next set because I think I can run them and still not NEED flares. I do think it will look good with that extra inch of tire width. I would go with one of these two widths and forget the 12.50's. Cost and weight can figure in there, too.

    I take it you don't do deep snow-as in several feet-skinny just gets you really stuck. I also find an aired down 12.5 works better in the rocks. If looks is the only criteria, yes, go tall/thin. As for flares, Patrick has it right. Hard to drive with mud on both sides of the windshield and on your face too.

    All that said, one of the coolest rigs I have ever seen (in the woods around Mt Baker-WA) was a 74 Ford on 7.50-20's.

    At the back: My 33 x 10:50s rub the inside rear fenders at full suspension flex. Guys tease me about the rubber rash back there.
    At the front: tire width is the limiting factor for my turning radius (even with the Dana 30).
    Keep it skinny, IMO.

    I used to get tire rub in the rear with 31 x 10.50s. I think knubby stockers would rub at full flex. I never saw it as an issue...if the rub marks bothered me I'd shoot a little spray paint on them but there's no real harm being done.

    But yea, I prefer tall/skinny in general.

    my tires work great until it gets past about 30 inches.
    it depends on what kind of snow as well of course.

    when I lived in S. Lake Tahoe I ran 33/12.50 on my truck in the summer time, but they sucked in the snow......went to a AT 285-75 during the winter......as was stated it depends on what kind of winter driving you do I suppose
