I finally got my aluminum slotted mags mounted onto my 70 CJ-5. I bought the "standard" sleeved lug nuts from my local parts store. I've noticed that they come loose after driving short distances. I made sure that they were shorter than the depth of the holes on the wheels. Regarding diameter, the sleeves sit "snug"...not too big, not too small.

Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do to fix it? Does anyone have a suggestion for what torque I should tighten them to? Or, welcome to 1970, wheels fell off all of the time back then!!!

    Thanks in advance.

1/2" wheel studs I usually torque to 90lbs., but that's with tapered seat lugs. I've never been a fan of shank style lugs. I'd say keep torquing them and hopefully they'll quit loosening.

In the 42 years I have had mine, I have never had the problem you describe. I am thinking you might have the wrong size or something. If you need it , I can take one off and get some measurement or something for you.

the only time I had problems like that was when somebody used grease on the wheel studs, sleeved nuts don't like that.

I had a problem on a different vehicle with the sleeved lug nuts. For me the trick was to put 'em on, drive for a few days, then retorque. Check tightness regularly.

    YMMV

So, I've been retorque-ing them, and it seems to be working. It's a little unnerving while driving; but, I'm just happy I caught it in time.

    WYOMIKE,
Would you think too small, or too big?

Are you using the washers with them, or is the design such that a washer won't fit?

Back in the day I ran Cragar s/s wheels on a street/strip car that just would not stay tight even with proper torquing AND the washers. I just got into the habit of checking them about once a week to be sure.

To be truthful, I have used anti-sieze on mine for years and never had any problems even with the anti-sieze.

My first thought would be there a little too long. I took some measurment of mine. As you can see, there is not much extra room. I wonder if your washer is too thin or has been flatten a little too much?

Hole inside the lug is 1-1/4" deep
stud sticks past the wheel by about 9/16"
From the bottom of the washer to the bottom of the nut is about 3/8"
My wheels at the lug holes are about 5/8" thick.

Here is a picture of mine:

    Hope this helps
