So I got this transmission crossmember (amongst other parts) from a donor jeep that was supposedly a flatfender (all disassembled, no body, so couldn't tell). I posted a few weeks ago about how the driveshafts were different as well. So here I go ahead and sandblast / powdercoat the cross member, get it ready to replace my current one...and then find out - they are different.

Are the 2A/3A crossmembers different than the CJ5? This one is wider by 3-4 inches. What in the world does this (the black) crossmember go to? I guess its back to the sandblaster with the nasty one.

The CJ2A's had longer cross members because instead of bolting to the underside of the frame like all the other CJ's, they bolt to the body mount like so. You can sort of see it in this pic:

The Flatty and CJ frames are the same width so no go there. I'd say possibly a Willys Wagon or PU as it has the hole for the side mount of the 18 transfer case.

Wow. Learn something every day. Did they use these all the way through the 2A production run?

The slots in the ends obviously don't get used on the CJ frame, were these cross members also used on the trucks/waggies?

It was definately a CJ...the odd thing was it had an F head in it. Got the parts from my friends dad who tore the thing down in the 70's, then left all the parts in a barn and the frame outside. The frame was half rotted into the ground so I scrapped it, but the barn had an F-head motor in it, the thinner diameter driveshalfs, and this cross member on the trans, amongst other parts. He said he knew it was something between a 50 and 1955...but couldn't remember the year. Could it possibly have been a CJ3B?

I think all 2A's used them. The 2 2A's I have are 1946ers. I don't know if Willys changed them in the 47 year or not.

Nope, they use the same ones as 3A's and I'm guessing 5's since they're the same width. Maybe M38A1? Somebody could have swapped in the Fhead for a blown Lhead too... I can take some measurements of my 2A one and my 3A one if you'd like. I also have a CJ5 one too...

The dirty one is a CJ5. The one in question is the longer black one that I'm suspecting is a 3B or 3A/2A

If I recall, I think my crossmember for my 2A was like the black one pictured.
I cut those frame brackets off and shortened mine like the dirty one shown in the pic when I put the V6 in the 2A.
The round cup for the torque mount has been removed from the black one, at least I think I see the outline from it in the pic.
So, in closing, mine now looks like the CJ5 crossmember.

That's definately a CJ2A rear engine support crossmember.
Pre 1949-1/2 era. The skid plate is also correct for that same era.
Note: how it was not notched for the front propeller shaft.
All post 1949-1/2 rear engine support crossmembers for early CJ's are exactly like yours.
(excepting the post 1965 crossmembers used with Dauntless)

Good info! I didn't think about the possibility of the holes being through the sides of the crossmember. Original pic you couldn't see them. I learned something today!
