Hey all, first off I'm not a vendor or spokes person in anyway!! Second I got this Idea from another member through my Rusty's 3" post.

Well I decided after a nightmare of a lift project that I was going to do a tie rod flip to get my steering back in geometry and to clear the POS Rusty's designed leaf springs. Read my Rusty's 3" lift post to see why I say that!!

Well after a few attempts to get a hold of Goferit I got to talk to Shannon (I think). 15 min. later and a few pointers I had my tie rod flip kit ordered. 4 days later it was in the mail box. Very easy compared to other big vendors I've gone through.

I did the entire tie rod flip mod in less than 4 hours counting installing my new Rugged Ridge HD Tie Rod and Drag Link and aliening/toeing everything in. All I needed was a 3/4" step bit from Harbor fright and tool ( $8 ), a drill, hammer, wire welder, and a grinder. Now drilling was very easy just take your time let the bit do the work. I then taped the inserts in, and laid down 4 good tack welds. (okay 3 good welds, I'm not a welder lol) Surprisingly it welded VERY easy even with different thickness/types of material. When all that was done I grinded the welds smooth and grinded the bottom side smooth. I then packed some paper towels in the inserts and shot a coat of paint over everything. It seriously was that easy!!!! I highly recommend using this product if your looking for some clearance or to fix your steering geometry.. Here are some pics of the process..

Hope this helps someone looking at doing this also. I know I was a bit intimidated originally!! Good luck and happy moding

Looks good. I thought you had to use a tapered ream for those...

Nope. You drill a straight 3/4 hole and the insert is straight on the outside and tapered on the inside. Drill, drop them in, tack weld, grind, and paint. Very easy.

if I read your question right....
the original holes and tie rod ends are tapered..one way.
you can't install anything from above (flip), stock or aftermarket, until you re-taper the hole or install the inserts as shown.

So, this contradicts the OP's claim that he bought a step bit. HF has some Silver-Demming bits that would work if you really need a 3/4" bit.

Unlike most other cutting tools, these have been well received by users.

I thought maybe he bought the step bit because they (good ones) drill really nice holes without grabbing, etc. Drilling a tapered hole in cast iron, no matter which side you start from, can be tricky.

I guess I'm a bit confused over the drill bit questions????? If you don't know what a step bit is or have never used them then give em a try. They are also called unibits in the construction world... These bits don't give you the taper your looking for they just make very short work out of just about any material. I use them daily as a electrician on mild to stainless steal... All I did to my knuckel is drill all the way through from the top with a cordless drill with the step bit. That gave me a perfect 3/4" hole (I used a 3/4" step bit). Then tap the inserts in!! VERY simple.

Patrick I think you are thinking of the Rock Equipment tie rod flip kit from OK4wd. I looked into that option also but didn't feel like forking out $50 for a reamer.

CJ5/442 You got me looking at that picture and wondering???? I just went and measured and I've got 1 1/2 to 1 3/4" at all 4 points I must have snapped that pic before the garage done alignment was completed. lol

FWIW, Unibit is a brand name, made by Irwin Tools.
