A friend of mine has a wood tubbed mud buggy on a jeep frame. It's 103" wheelbase with a drum D-30 front with 3.73 gears and a D-44 rear...ants were under it so I could not scrape the tag on the D-44 to see if it matches the front.

    Basically just the rolling chassis.

Based on what I know it appears to be a '72-75 CJ6.

Is there a data plate anywhere on the frame where VIN may be located? If I can find a VIN I can decipher the rest of what is used to be. I know where they are on the tubs but there is nothing left of the jeep tub...it's wooden now. chainsawguy

There is no tag but the #'s should be stamped in the framerail. Usually on the right rear on top iirc.

Yep what NIck said that's where I've found it but it's not usually that visable. also isn't there one up behind the right engine mount on top of the frame as well?

Could also be a '72-73 Commando frame. Same wheelbase, but the rear springs are different, and outboard from the frame. A CJ will have the springs under the frame rails. Both are officially 104" WB.

If you find a number, it will be the sequential serial number for that year, not the entire VIN.

I've worked on a couple commandos in past and I am fairly certain it's a CJ...but with the ants biting mehh I couldn't look closely enough (looking for the rear offset spgs but the wooden tub covered things up fairly well).

Thanks for the info guys...I will take a look in that area of the frame and see if it's a CJ or comando for sure or not and go from there.

Well it turns out it is a commando. The rear spring length gives it away.

I posted in the commando forum here to tell what my hypothetical plans are...and to see if someone wants to tar and feather me for it! LOL
