I *think* the rear was switched to Dana 44 with the 3A's. I know the flattie (3A) originally had a 44...

    Just FYI.

Some of the early 3a's had 41's and the later ones had 44's. Don't know when they switched but I've had 3a's with both rear axles. I also have 5.38's with a 231. I like them. Work great on the trail. Lousy on the highway even with 33" tires. I should put on an overdrive one of these days but with the PTO winch, it's just too much hanging off the back of the transfer case with the kind of stuff I do. I tow it most of the time anyway. Nickmil.

Go with the 5:38's, the 420, and the OD. It's only $$$$ R)R)

The CJ2A's started w/ the 23 rear and then went to the 41. The 3A's initially had a 41 rear but it was soon phased out and a 44 replaced it.

How bout the 4sp with the 5:38's? I just was given a set of flatty axels with 5:38's that I plan on swapping with my 3:73 gears.
I won't have much top end, but it'll sure get there fast with my injected 225!

4th gear is almost always a 1-1 ratio, so no change there
there might be some minor differences between 2nd and 3rd also
the real gain is in the granny low 1st

Joe: I have 5.38's with 33" tires. Don't do much Hwy. driving, but at 3000 rpm it does 55 fine. Around town, they work great. An OD would be great for the Hwy., but like I said, don't do much.

Kodiak - I am one of the 'weird ones'... I run 215's, 235's and one set of 31's. I won't run anything larger than 31's on my jeeps. Experience has told me that bigger than that and I start having trouble (break things, have to lift = top heavy = rolls).
