I've got this old Ramsey 8000 winch that I'm planning on installing sometime this month (if my buddy helps me rebuild it).

I have looked at the owner's manual for it, and it looks like it's supposed to sort of sit between the frame rails, and be mounted low kinda between them. Still not sure where the roller fairlead should go unless it's cut into the bumper.

I've also considered (when I get my front locker in) installing a saginaw power steering conversion, but it seems to me that the saginaw box is going to be in conflict with the winch if I let it sit down between the rails like that.

Has anyone else run into this? I'd like the winch to sit low (for some reason)

I'm sinking my Warn/Belleview 8000 between the frame rails using a landcruiser bumper that I picked up from jpflat2a. I thought it funny at first that the winch didn't mount exactly on the center, but was slightly offset to the passenger side. Then I realized that this would allow me to have the winch sunk and a Saginaw conversion.

I can't help much with the Saginaw part of the equation, but my wife's 67 Jeepster had a PTO Ramsey like yours (Genuine Jeep Equipment sticker and all), and the fairlead mounted to the top of the bumper, IIRC.

Well, I'm thinking it probably will be a long time before I ever get that locker so I'm going to go ahead and mount the winch down low. I guess the wire will spool off the top of the winch so it should be over the top of the bumper.

    I'll worry about saginaw later.

    Thanks anyway guys.

I run a Koenig PTO winch with Saginaw steering on the CJ-5. I had to offset the winch to the passenger side, but it did fit between the frame rails and steering box ok. Looks kind of funny with the fairlead being off set like that, but well worth it. People quit laughing when you're winching them out of trouble. :D Nickmil.

I did the same as Nickmil until I broke the case on my Koenig. My stupidity not the winches fault. Actually I just cracked the case and it is repairable, but I'm using a Ramsey electric winch for now.

I have a '66 with both a ramsey pto winch and Saginaw power steering. My winch is the short drum unit and it fits fine. The long drum unit holds more cable but I don't think it would work. I think my drum is 12" wide. I mounted the fairlead on the bumper. The mount that came with my winch also made the bumper sit higher that stock.

I have a Rhino PTO winch (Japan copy of a Ramsey) and a saginaw power steering in my '67' CJ5. If it's not too late I can send you some pictures.

so what do intermediate cj5's do when they mount a winch? given that they have a front crossmember in that spot.

I have an old Ramsey 8K mounted nice and low on mine. Doesn't block any air from the radiator at all. Fairlead is in a custom bumper. I mounted my Sagi box sorta low using a AA plate and put 2 gussets from the bottom of the frame to the plate. This helped keep the tie rods fairly level on a lifted JEEP. Also put the steering shaft that goes into the box under the cross member instead of through it. PO had it a mess. Much gooder now.
