I am about 50% complete on the wiring of my 73 CJ5, 304V8. I have all of the lights wired with the exception of my backup switch (ordered new one). My harness came from EZ wiring, it is the mini-20. I am working on the engine wiring have loceted the temp sending unit, and replaced my selenoid, battery & starter cables. Now.... I have a wire in my harness that says "Oil Sending Unit".
I must be a dumby! I cannot figure out where this Oil Sending Unit wire goes? I think the oil guage I removed must have been mechanical. Guess my question is :

Where is the electrical oil sending unit?
Where is the mechanical connection for the Oil pressure gauge?

The oil sender on a 304 is on the oil pump cover, next to the oil filter. There is a 1/8" NPT hole that needs to be filled with something, or oil will come gushing out. The same hole is used for a mechanical OP gauge. These Jeeps only came with an electrical gauge, so the sender would be removed to install an aftermarket mechanical gauge.

That would explain the little plastic tube coming out of the fitting. This would have been for a mechanical connection I assume? Timgr, Do you have a part # for the electrical connection?

Any auto store will carry it. They are called an Oil Pressure Switch for the guage...here's a pic

There's a second one that is for the "Oil" light, looks like this

If you already have a mechanical gauge, there's no need to install the sender for the electric gauge. I'd tape off the wire and move on.

find out where the other end of that plastic tube goes.
If you don't have a gauge on the other end, you will have a mess.

Thanks guys! This a complete rebuild so I haven't purchased my gauge yet. I will decide whether to go with electrical or mechanical. Now at least I know where it is and the options I have.

I went and hooked up both mechanical and idiot light.
I like the peace of mind of an accurate(more or less) oil pressure reading and the attention getting back-up system that fills one of the random dash holes that have appeared in my dash over the years.
