I need to rebuild my F-Head 134 in my 63 CJ5. I also have a restored 47 CJ2a and 3 other parts CJ2a's from 46 - 49. I am putting together another good L-Head engine right now and am planning on pulling the F-head out of the CJ-5 and put in an L-head so I can keep driving it during the rebuild (it's my primary vehicle).
Does anyone know of any problems that I am likely to encounter swapping these engines?

Moved as swapping engines is not restoration.

    can't think of anything major
    air cleaner mods?
    6v or 12v?
the front engine mounting plate might be different, or it might be that CJ plates are the same and pickup/wagon plates are different? (can't remember)
anyways, I think that's a height issue and which way the mounting feet face

Engine frame mounts may be different. Most L heads used a different pattern than the F head. Some L heads (later models - and DJ3A) used the same pattern as the F head.

Carb linkage is different, but you probably could swap in the F head linkage temporarily on the L head.

Y'know, it doesn't take all that long to rebuild and F head engine. If you plan well you probably could do it in ten days or less. The machine shop queue is the long pole in the tent.

The biggest time consumer here is getting parts if you need them. Total 'touch time' on the engine is really quite low.

I spent a couple of hours taking an F head apart today until I ran into a tooling problem. Another couple hours and I'd have had it ready to go to the machine shop for cleaning and valve guide replacement.

You really can't order bearings or rings until you know what or if the crank / bore has to be made larger or smaller.

Go down to Thrifty car rental and rent a car and forget about swapping in a different engine.

Then, you can appeal to the moderator to re-assign your post to 'restoration' since you no longer will be doing an engine swap.

    good luck

Well, I'm obviously a bit of a cheapskate. I really don't want to rent a car and I don't want to be in a hurry as I am trying to learn as I go. I have the L-head ready to go in now and I started it on the floor to make sure it will run.
I've got a bit of a machine shop in my garage so I'm hoping I can adapt where necessary.
This whole thing might be a mistake but I'm probably going to find out tomorrow late afternoon, how big of a mistake.
If the forward tailpipe will bolt on and the engine mounts will line up I can make the carb linkage work somehow and get the aircleaner hose extended.
Unfortunately, this is a hobby that overlaps into real life so I need to keep some wheels under me while I'm farting around with rebuilding this F-head.
I sure love the simplicity of these engines. Even and idiot like myself can figure it out if you keep putting it together wrong enough times.
Thanks for your advice and help.

The L-and F-head have quite a few differences. Bellhousing, mounts, starters, bellhousings, rad outlets and linkages to name a few. This is not a painless swap, especially for a short time. I agree with the other guys, rent a Neon, and get 'er dun right.
