Anyone use one, or does anyone have a DIY option?

Gad! I made one, many many years ago. It isn't too big of a deal. I think I used something like three pieces of 1/4" strap, bolted together at the ends, then a big turnbuckle for the forth side. Two more holes for a couple of bolts to go into the differential housing. You don't have to spread it very much, just 20-50 thousands as I remember.

I'd like to be more specific, but this was something like 30 years ago. The bearings I put in the rear end are still there and doing just fine.

Really pretty easy to make. Use bar stock, all thread, and tubing for the all thread to slip into.

These guys are right, it is easy to make. I made a couple years ago also, one for a D44 and a D27.
One thing though, don't overdo it. I think the FSM states .020 max spread, you could distort and ruin the housing if you take it too far. Don't leave it spread either, take it off as soon as you remove the differential case.

I've done at least 5 carrier installs and never used a spreader. Skew the races slightly to get it started and use a plastic faced deadblow hammer to tap it into place. It's called "shade tree mechanics".

It's not the re-install that's the problem. If they've never been done since the factory the preload makes it very hard to pry them out. It's way easier if you relieve the preload some w/ a spreader.

Yea, I’ve been into a few of axles now and didn’t use a spreader on any of them.
To remove I have a strap I wrap around the carrier then I hook it to a slide hammer. Works well too, pops it right out.
    Then install as Posimoto described.
