I have a trac loc in my D44 w/ fresh clutches and its alright. The Aussie in front helps a lot though. Its real easy to slip a trac loc.

I think the PowerTrax No Slip will work. Best bet may be to change to an open carrier. Many more options that way.

I've been really happy with my Detroit Locker. I've had it for three years now with no problems.

Good point Scott. Any of the lockers that replace the carrier will work.

What kind of budget are you on? This is going to help determine your direction. For a good, inexpensive set up and really decent offroading (that is if your not going to upgrade suspension, lift, tires, ect..., I would get a master rebuild kit for your D44 including the clutch pack and have your Trac Lok tightened up and rebuild along with fluid, bearings, seal and the like. Add that to a lunchbox like Aussie mentioned earlier in the front and you have a VERY capable Jeep. Lunchboxes are always on. They try to slip in and out depending on the drive pressure on the axle, but don't always work that well. If you put a lunchbox style in the rear you may notice it driving kindof funny down the road.

That being said, if you can afford it a full locker in the rear that you can turn on and off manually like and electric one or air powered one is a great option will certainly get you up that hill!

I would also consider putting a lunchbox style in the front and rebuild the axle with a kit as well. (Basically, as long as your in there). The luncbox style will only be engaged when the front axle is locked fron the hubs therefore you can turn it on and off manually.

With a Trac Lok in the rear and an open front, you're only really offroading with 2.5-3 out of your 4 wheels. :)

Hope this isn't too confusing and let us know if you have more questions! This is a great topic!

Here's a pic of an Aussie in a D30 front just so you can see what they look like...

wtlwThanks for the info guys. I just got one more question for now that is. I have decided to go with a full locker in the rear and was wondering what was the difference between the full detroit and a full spool as far as handling goes? I know there is a significant difference in price.

Spool, means there is no differential effect between the two axles at any time. They are locked together all the time.

Detroit locker, locks up as power is applied. More power, more lockup. When coasting it is unlocked.

Both will cause tire chirp when cornering under power on pavement. The spool will chirp even when not powered as it is always locked up..

Basically the spool is like a solid axle to both wheels ...

Maybe someone else can splain it better 'n me..

Your almost right. The Detroit locker is always locked, until one wheel turns slower then the other. Then it will unlock. Under power. It will not unlock. That is why it chirps the tire in a corner.

Here is one of the best demonstrations I have seen explaining how the different 4 wheel drive systems work.

    http://www.jeep.com/en/4x4/how_systems_work/

Just use the links on the left hand side. They have graphical and audio explanations of what is actually going on.
