Hi, I have been reading lately that Tuxedos came with a 3 speed column shift. The thing that im wondering about is that mine has a floor shift. Did the Tuxedos with the Dauntless V-6 come with the floor shift in some cases or do you guys thing this was modified? Thanks for any answers. :?

Hey there Tuxman, welcome from Ohio.

Some did come with floor shift, such as my '64 (pre-Dauntless V6) Tuxedo. The only 'tux I've seen that came with column shift was a 4-banger model (board member "biggnbrittle"). In '64 and '65 it was somewhat common for the 4-cyl to be swapped out with a Buick V6 at the dealer, which didn't have a provision for column-shift (IIRC). Jeep took notice of that trend, then bought the 225 V6 from Buick to make their own "Dauntless" V6. (again, IIRC).

Tuxman...is there evidence of a column-shift in the dash notch? It'd be the "notch" instead of a "curve" in the dash over the steering column. It'd be a way to tell if it's been converted. :)

I think all the V6 models were floor shift and all the 4 cyl models were column.
I may be incorrect about the column shift 4 cylinders after the V6 was introduced.
Your 64 should be column shift.

Few, I was worried that maybe my 66 Tux was modified to the floor shifter. That makes me feel better. The jeep isnt in my possesion but I will be in a few days. Ill take a look and let you guys know about the notch.

From the "Hubbard's V6 History" on the front page:
I've always suspected that my '64 (titled '66) Tux was one of those first few Buick V6 (pre-Dauntless) swaps, but now I'm suspicious of it because of this theory: If it's true that all 4-cyl Tuxs were column shift, then it stands to reason that a V6 swap would involve removal of remote shift linkage, a swap of the dashboard (+ shift decal), and even tranny at the same time. If not, then there would either be evidence of column shift linkage via the dash notch or plugged-off access holes in the tranny. I notice neither on my tux. :(

Actually the decals are the same shift pattern, think about it.
What tranny do you have? Are there holes on the side for linkage? Many a column shift tranny was changed over to floor by removal of the side shift forks and going to a top shift setup. I had a few of those conversions in 2A's.
Maybe it's the tags that were swapped. Do the frame and serial numbers match?

The easiest way to tell if the jeep had a column shift is to look at the dashboard.

In the column shift models, the dashboard had a vertical indent right at the point where the steering column pass under. That was for the column shift control levers. This indent was around 3 inches long and an inch and a half wide to two inches. Ya' can't miss it.

Even if all remnants of the column shift have been removed, the dashboard is almost always left, so it is one of the best ways to get an indication.
