My CJ5 Project...trouble already.

    Hello all,
New member MoreJeep here. I’ve been lurking here the past month since buying a CJ5 from a good friend of mine. He had decided to sell it as he hadn't driven it much in recent years. When I heard he was selling I thought I’d be a cool project to work on with my father-in-law. The fact my father-in-law has available garage space, the necessary tools and a great deal of wrenching knowledge was a big plus. As for why I want to do this..I am not sure why. But I feel a need/urge to get my hands dirty... I've not done much wrenching since my early 20’s. Anyway, I am looking for guidance and hopefully some feedback regarding my project. Not sure where to begin but I suppose the specifics about the Jeep would be a good place to start:
    Vehicle Info:
    1966 Jeep CJ 5
    VIN: 8305 A 197566
    PAINT: 225
    TRIM: 201
Currently has a tired F134 in it…runs but needs work.
Has a Tulsa 8000# winch on front... not working…shaft to the Winch isn’t connected …Can’t lift the lever to engage or disengage it…No cable on the spool…see photos.

    Info:
    Jeep came with spare parts:
Complete 225 V6 (Casting Number: 1358435) with headers.

    225 V-6 engine ID Code: K LH 624
    [IMG]
Drive train (3SPD Tranny, Transfer Case, Bell housing, front and rear axles)
I’ve not been able to id the drive train parts…Not sure how to id the axles. PO told me they had lockouts and larger drums…think he said 10” drums. Some guidance on how to id the axles, Bell housing would be appreciated.
My father-in-law came down a few weeks ago with a flatbed and dragged the Jeep up north to his farm… along with the spare V6 and spare drive train. He got a good start on our project and took the body off and got the spare 225 V6 on an engine stand and opened it up. Sadly, the engine, which supposedly was in good running order when it was pulled from a donor jeep 12 years ago, looks to be in sorry shape. Some of the bearings look bad....scored crankshaft?

Not sure its worth rebuilding...cost to turn the crankshaft? Gaskets, Pistons, Timing chaing and gears plus plus plus.. And that's before considering the cost of having the heads done.

One of the heads has serious rust and the piston where the rust was refuses to be extracted..

Hopefully, the photos are clear enough to show what I am dealing with. Seems things are not looking good for what I had in mind for this motor. Removing the F134 out and putting the 225 in its place. My hope was that I would have enough parts between these two engines and drive trains to accomplish a swap without buying additional parts.
Also not sure why my VIN indicates this jeep came stock with a V6 when it actually has a F134. My friend said when he bought the jeep it had the F134 in it. And to his knowledge it was bone stock. As you can see from these photos he added over sized wheels and such…but he insists this jeep was stock when he got it and that he did not modify the engine or drive train.
Well that’s enough babbling for now. Look forward to opinions on the crankshaft damage and rusted head.

Thanks for reading…and if you like to see pictures I have so far click Here for my PhotoBuck

#1....think you'll have better response if you break your questions up more individually than a bunch in one post

#2....if you copy the img code at PB you can paste them into your threads here for ease of those looking

#3....try looking at the tab above marked "technical" as there's lots of basic Jeep info there that may help

I'd bet that if you look in Craigslist long enough you could score the 225 parts you need......may want to post a wanted to buy ad in the classifieds here as well
