steering box

Need some ideas on what I'm missing. I have a 75 cj w/304 and power steering. I believe I have a mid 70's wagoneer steering gear box. I've noticed that the bell coupler will not tighten up on the shaft. Tightened up, I can twist the coupler on the shaft a little and using a screwdriver I can slip the coupler off. Question, Is the steering shaft on a wagoneer a smaller diameter than the CJ or am I missing something.

I had the same problem with my 74 w/304. The PO had installed the power steering. I modified my bell coupler to fit the steering shaft. Then when I replaced the steering box I had to purchase another coupler, because my modified one was to small.

 

There are some wagoneer power steering boxes that have a smaller input shaft than the CJ boxes, I am not sure which years, maybe all. I have a box from a 79 and had to modify the coupler as well.

 

The coupler for a manual steering gear might work. It's a smaller diameter.

 

Thanks, At least I'm not imaging things. I guess that's what I'll have to do. Any tips on how to modify the coupler? do you think the rag joint off a wagoneer would work? I'll take a look at it when I get home tonight.
