I haven't had much time to work on the jeep but have done a little more toward getting the tub ready for removal.

I got the pesky screw out of the wiper motor cover. Not pertinant to progress but was bugging me.

I've got all the bolts out of the tub that connect to the frame. Broke a good many of those. Actually, the dremel tool turned out to be my most valuable tool to cut some of these off. I had a particularly bad time with 2 bolts that held the cross member directly to the frame C-chanel just behind the seat area where the fram curves up.

I pulled the seats now just to reduce the weight of the tub.

Tub without seats (notice the PB blaster guys, I listen to advice!)

The last thing holding it were the steps. They had a brace that went to the frame. I almost didn't notice those, that would have really screwed up my steps.

Should be ready to come off now!

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to strap on to the tub for removal. I have an engine hoist and tractor with loader and forks to lift it with but have no great ideas on how to attach to the tub without causing any damage. I think 4 guys would work best but that unfortunately is what I don't have access to easily. Does anyone have good pics or a good description of how to do this as a one man operation.

Actually two people can probably lift it off if you have the space to take it straight back off the frame. I only needed three for mine and that was beacuse we had to turn it to take it off. You can also remove the shifter cane and then you won't have to lift it as high. Your's might be heavier than mine since I took every last thing off the tub first.

Since I don't have any friends who were willing to come over and help :) I had to go it alone. I rigged up some rope and used my engine hoist. Once I got the balance right, it was pretty simple.

My tub had some tubes (I assume for a top) that went through through the sides over the back wheels, yours is newer and may not have those. I took the ropes through those tubes and also attached the rope to the front of the tub through the defroster holes, which formed a triangular mounting point.

It took some trial and error to get the balance correct.

I used a cable jack (come along) on the front, two pairs of ratchet straps (alt straps as they move to the extent of there range), the rafters. When the tub was high enough, I then rolled the frame under the tub (I purchased the jeep in pieces), then i lowered the tub on the frame. The role bar is the heaviest thing to remove, that took two people to move.

    hope this helps

Thanks guys, especially 1959Willys, that is very helpful. It's just my 75 year old father and myself to get this off. I have plenty of mechanical lifting power, just worried about bending something. I have those hole in the sides as suggested (I think they are for the top). Thanks. Anyone else who wants to share some pics of the process please do. I hope to get to it this coming weekend.

The sides are very rigid so you don't need to worry too much about them. On my first attempt, I noticed it looked like it was going to bend the cowl so I had to reposition the ropes. The tub is not as heavy as you might imagine. Mine was completely stripped, though.

Another way to DIY is with some sawhorses and 2 or 3 (8 ft) 2x4s.
Slip the 2x4s under the tub from the sides.
Lift one side, position the sawhorse under the 2x4s.
    Repeat on other side.
Roll chassis out from under the tub.

I used brute force to lift mine and just sorta wiggled it back off the frame then stood it up on the back end, although it doesn't balance well with the chain latches. Def. helps if the steering wheel and shaft are out of the way first.

My tailights are garbage so I don't mind scraping them around spinning the tub to move it here and there, but that's something to keep in mind.

I used some unistrut and welded it iont an "H" pattern.... attached it to the sides and lifted it with a chain drop hoist..... I also did the stand in the tub method.... pretty scary.... LOL!!

I built an "A" frame out of wood and hung a chain hoist from it. Eye bolts through the body mount holes connected to the hoist.

Tub is off! Thanks especially to posimoto. The eye bolts through the floorboard body mounts was a great suggestion. Worked great. I was able to pull the tub by myself with no help. Probably more than a 1-man job honestly but I got it done.

Here are some pics of the process.

    Floor body mount hook ups.

I picked up the tub from the side with my engine hoist enough to clear the shifter levers under the firewall. The rear I picked up and put a landscaping timber across and supported the rear with 2 saw horses. I moved the chassis as far as I could until the rear tires hit the hoist legs, then I had an issue (and overhead A-frame would have been the nuts but I didn't have one). I didn't get a good pic at this stage as I was a little excited you could say R)

Once I got the shifters cleared though, I decided I needed more help. There were a couple moments that finger pinching was a concern here so I invoked real hydraulics at that point and got the tractor and loader out. I picked up the back end with the bucket (tub fit perfectly inside the bucket). I then repositioned my timber and saw horses to the front and got the engine hoist out of the way. I was able to pull the chassis out in this configuration.

loader bucket gently under tail section

Once the chassis was completely out, I grabbed back onto the front with the engine hoist and eye bolt chain so I had both ends supported with hydraulics.

From here I was able to get the tub set back down on 4 jackstands and the chassis pulled back alongside ready for the next stages.

All in all, probably another helper would have been nice but it was doable and no injuries to either myself or the tub!

Some pics of the chassis once the tub is off. Skip if boring, most of this is so I have a clue how to put this thing back together later.

This is mid-ship on the drivers side frame inside. Can anyone tell me what this thing is? This pic isn't real clear but i am referring to the cable piece. I don't recall unhooking anything to it but maybe I did and just can't recall. It seems like a ground cable or something or a piece to tie off another cable. I'm sure someone can tell me what it is.

Tranfer case linkages. Once I saw how this works with my own eyes, I can see how a twin stick will work. I am going with a twin stick modification for sure. That is just plain neat.

You'll want a second set of hands putting the tub back on. It's a PITA with only yourself, I used a similar snatch bock set up that Posi used, it worked well to lift the tub off.

I used an engine hoist to lift the bed on and off my J10, that worked well.

I'm pretty sure that cable thingy is an exhaust hanger, my '73 has them too.

I love it! We're all in the same crapper with this stuff. My wife sees this getting worse and worse all the time and just comes out, takes a look, laughs and goes back into the house. It would be worse I guess if she took an interest, then she'd want to help and that would be really bad :)
