I am looking for some OEM rims for my 72 CJ5. I found a gentleman that is selling some he calls OEM. He describes these as Kelsey Hayes rims. He says they appear to be date coded 1982 and have the ridges for a dog dish type cap. Does anyone know if these sound like the appropriate rim for the 72? I don't have any pictures unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure that the wheels did not change from the late 60s through the end of the CJ run. There may be some clearance issues with disk brakes with the earlier CJ wheels, but later wheels should be fine. Make sure these are wheels from a CJ, with 5 lugs on a 5-1/2" diam bolt circle. Later wheels have a smaller bolt circle and will not fit.

Thanks. Good info, I appreciate as much detail as I can get. Are there any stampings or markings I should look for on the rims to confirm OEM? Also, what width would they likely have been from the factory (and as importantly, where do I measure that width - bead seat to bead seat or somewhere else). Oh yeah - the kelsey hayes was the OEM rim maker correct??

There were definitely changes when disk brakes came around. I have a set of original 1974 rims that will not work with disk brakes (they hit the calipers). The 82 rims (disk brakes) will work on earlier Jeeps without a problem though.

There may be a KH stamp on the back of he wheel. I will look when I get home from the holiday. The factory wheels are all off-white front with a gray-green primer back. You always measure bead surface to bead surface, inside the rim. I recall the CJ and FSJ wheels are 6"... not certain though - some may have been 5.5".

I would echo Sterlclan's comment on the tires in the picture Tim. What are those (brand and sizing)? I am wanting to ultimately put tires with the knobby look to them back on my CJ5 once I get the rims being discussed in this post. I don't want anything extreme just that rugged look and those are smack on what I am after.

Those are L78-15LT Co-op Grip Spur tires. Apparently there is a chain of Co-op stores in the south, at least in Tennessee, that sells them. They came on the Jeep. Maybe Bill L. can tell us more about the Co-op stores - I guess they are a farm/rural supply place, like Tractor Supply.

Well, I got interested in this subject...the tires do look good. Here's a few threads that I found...apparently, these tires are NOT easy to come by.

From 1 year ago at the CJ2A page...
    http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/your-local-coop-phone_topic12527.html

when I searched the ourcoop.com web site, Grip Spurs are no where to be found.

oh yeah, they are apparently made by Kelly.

Update. I bought the rims. Got 5 of them for $80. Cost me half that much to drive up to Virginia and pick em up. I don't know if they are original or not but they fit the hubs! 4 are matching and have the following stamped on the inside of the rim. Can anyone decipher this stuff as to make and origin? I assume part of that is a date (7/24/1982??). I am especially interested in the JJ and M52 as to what that means?

They are 5 and 1/2 inch from bead to bead.

    Here is the outside look

and mounted on the CJ5 front hub. Fit like a glove around the hub!

Here is the 5th one (spare). It is different and has a more rolled over inside lip. It also measures 6.0 inches from bead to bead. You can see some subtle differences in the hub cap catches etc.

The spare had K 1 4 stamped in it.

inside of the 5th spare oddball. You can see the more rolled lip in the inside of the hub hole if you look closely.

The seller said they were kelsey hayes, I suspect they are not as I didn't see any KH stamping. Whatever they are, I couldn't beat the price and they are in great condition from what I can tell. If they are not exactly OEM, they will be close enough for now. 80 bucks for 5 rims, 2 had skins on them and I got 2 more skins this morning for $10 mounted up so at least I can make the chassis a roller now. I asked the guy at the tire shop for some used 205/75/R15's if he had them and thought that was what he was doing. I didn't check before I left and he put one 205/65/R15 and one 205/60/R15 on so I have 3 different sizes which ticked me off , but what the heck for the purpose and cost I guess I should just suck it up. I am not going to drive on these but my obsessive/compulsive disorder kicks in when things aren't just right. I guess with this old jeep I better get over that crap right now.

The jeep looks like a dork mobile now after I took off the bigger 10 inch wide tires and rims off. I think these will look fine with an appropriate knobby tire similar to Tim's picture once I get ready to put 'real' tires on it. The old skins will be good while I am working on it.

JJ signifies the type of rim contour of the wheel.
