I know I'm :dead horse: But I did a search on this but I didn't find what I needed.

What are these holes in the upper left and right sides on the windshield frame for?:?:?

Aux light bracket? Oversize mirror bracket? It's really anyone's guess. Those were most likely added by a PO. I don't have them on my '71.

On my two jeeps it held the bracket for the iron rod that fits on the soft top above the door. The rod goes from the bracket to the first bow. The rod has a right angle where it goes in the bracket and has a small pin on a chain that keeps it in place.

I don't know the brands of the soft tops I had. Both were aftermarket, beyond repair and ended up in the trash.

Then I'll give my guess. It's for soft top rods, as Mark stated above. My '67 had them, my '70 had them, and my '71 has them. The '67 and '70 both had the tops on them when I bought them.

The '70 had an older Bestop on it, and my '67 I don't recall the brand.

Ditto what patrick said. My 71 had the top on it when I bought it and those holes were for the hardware.
I stuck stainless bolts and a rubber washer in them when I put my Besttop on years ago. Intend to weld them closed when I paint my jeep.

Every Early CJ I've owned has had those holes, and like the others have said, for the soft top rods. My (bone stock) '57 has them, my '59' 5 has them, my '67' has them, my '59 '6 has them, my '68 has them, my daughter's '70 has them, and all the '75 and older w/s frames I've had, bottom or top mount wipers have had them.

    Well, you get the idea...:D

This is interesting. My soft top rod brackets fasten to the AFT side of the windshield frame. The fasteners do not penetrate the FWD sheet metal.

That's the same way my soft top rod brackets mount, that's why I was wondering what these holes were for.

I guess I'll just seal them up somehow.:smash: :toetap:

The bracket does mount inside the windshield frame, but uses thru bolts.

The later style tops do have the rod mount that mounts to the frame part of the windshield, not through the sheet metal like the original style tops.

Might just run some nice looking bolts through the holes with a dab of sealer to seal them up.

The plastic body pannel plugs would work well there and look halfways sanitary from both sides

Maybe you did not have factory soft tops. It was an option after all, maybe someone bought your Jeeps with out tops at all.

We are in Idaho right now and came across Montana during the cold a** blizzard they just had. We bought some neon green soft ear plugs and plugged them up. Works great looks cool. Sealed up the old mirror holes too.
