What kind of nut is this (locknut??) that goes on the bolt that attaches the adjustable shaft to the linkage?

The bolt that was in mine was a makeshift something that was just flopping around and I need to replace it.

What I need to know is...does the bolt lock tight on the linkage or on the bolt itself?

I would think the bolt, if it tighten up on the linkage it would make it hard to shift, wouldn't it?????

I believe it is a simple Marsden style locking nut (the style with slots that act like an aircraft style pinch nut). I don't think that bolt is shouldered going from memory.

I believe you are correct. When I rebuilt the linkage in my '70 before I sold it, I just used fine thread bolts and nylon stop nuts.

The third item up from the nut is a bushing that is slightly longer than the shaft coupler is wide. Therefore you can't tighten the nut/bolt tight enough to seize the coupler and shaft. Be sure you grease these pieces before assy.

Thanks everybody for all the info. I made a slot in a nut :smash: and drilled a hole in the bolt to add a cotter pin (carter pin I've always called them) and greased her up real good. I got it back together today, it's a workin' GOOD!!!:driving:
