I'm finally starting on the re-decking of my trailer and am thinking about putting a toolbox under the metal deck, with a hinged lid, as opposed to putting in on the tongue. I'm looking for ideas on how to do the lid and latch. Anyone here ever done that or seen one?

Sounds like you might be creating a big square funnel to direct water and dirt into your tool box.

Yeah, thought of that. I may put small drain holes in the bottom and raise the tools, straps and what not up off the floor a half inch or so using some expanded metal. We only get around 12" of rain per year, so may not be as big an issue as other places. I'm really looking for ways to make sure the lid seals, like putting a lip and molding around the inside of the opening. Not sure if it's worth the effort. I'll most likely use this trailer for occasionally hauling dirt or yard waste (that I'm not composting), which might muck up the lid edges.

Thanks, Andrew. That's pretty much what I'm after but to build, not buy. Not sure if it's even worth the effort.

    I gotta ask-

How do you get at the tools if you have a load of dirt in the trailer?

    H.:?

how big of tools? you can use a lid and rim intended for the passenger side under seat box for a more original look

<lol> I'm not sure I'd need too many tie down straps for that load of dirt! But you may get the prize for getting me to rethink this side trip to the cutting, grinding, welding activity on Thursday. I'll post up a "build" thread for the decking adventure and we'll see if it includes an under-the-deck tool box. :smash: NO matter what, it'll be a great way to spend veteran's day. :patriot:

I don't know what depth you're dealing with but maybe a side access, like a pull out drawer.

I'm only thinking a foot deep or so. I don't want it to hang down too far. I did think of a slide out but I'd be worried something might catch inside. That and having to pull it out with a bunch of heavy stuff inside, like maybe a bottle jack, chains, etc. But a good idea, still.
