I am fighting with my gen on my 66 cj, and so far it is wining . is there any way to test the output with the gen still on the jeep? I had the gen tested and they said it was working but when I reinstalled it nothing . then I replaced the volt reg and again nothing and the wiring is good . so that brings me back to the gen itself.

    any ideas?:?

First off you have to know what circuitry your generator it. Two types "A" and "B" circuit. I am not completely positive but I think prestolite was another manufacturer that made them both ways. One type, you ground the field terminal while having battery voltage applied to the armature (regulator disconnected) and the other type you apply battery voltage to both ARM and FLD terminals on the generator (agn with regulator disconnected) and you do this while the vehicle is running and volt meter connected to your battery. Your auto shop that tested the generator would tell you whether to ground or apply.

If I remember right the generator body should grounded to regulator base. On generator body there should threaded hole for a ground wire to the base. a quick test was to take field wire from the regulator and ground that to the frame and if the voltage shot up,the gen is working and change the regulator. but do it quickly because you can burn the generator up.
