I have a 70 cj5 v6 with a 3 inch lift and 32 inch tires. I know that I will be putting power steering on it in the future but right now i dont have the money. I have seen that the ross bell crank and drak link can be rebuilt cheap.I have a lot of play and it wants to go all over the road. Has anybody rebuilt one with any good luck? thanks for any input

I rebuilt the Ross box on my '68 with a new quadrant shaft from Northstar Willys, and other than some minor weepage around the shaft seal it corrected the majority of my problems.

You'll have to check everything from the steering tube bearings thru to the king pins, a little here & a little there adds up fast. Do a search on "death wobble".

Once properly rebuilt it will steer as well as anything on the road.

Thanks all. I have replaced the front axle with a rebuild dana 30 so the knuckles are all good and the steering tube and ross box look ok. I all so replaced the tie rod ends on all the front. The drak link and the bell crank look like no one has ever done anything to them, so that is why Im looking at that as a problem. Dont want to spend a bunch of money just dont want to have the jeep drive all over the road

i rebuilt the steering box & bell crank on an m38 last year. i was disappointed in the quality of parts i had to chose from. they all come from the same place so going to a different vendor don't help. the bell crank gets little needle brgs now instead of big fat bushing so i spaced them as far apart as they would go & fabbed a spacer to go between them to hold them apart. the bushings for the steering box just fell thru the holes & ended up fabbing some myself. the sector was ok but i sent three worms back before i got one that didn't bind. well, it bound a LITTLE, but not so much you couldn't live with it. the worm bearings worked good, and from forum feedback i was looking for them to be junk. i was trying to rid this jeep of the dreaded "death wobble", and in the end it all worked perfect but it took three times the work it should have, and i think i earned $.50 an hr for my labor. so it can be done, but it won't be a weekend job.

    i did this last year.
rebuilt drag link, box, sectorshaft ,bell crank etc.
i can let go of the wheel and roll a smoke.
    it tracks perfectly straight.
it was one of the easier things i have done.
    P.S.
    mine was a weekend job.
    not bragging .
thats just how it went for me.
