I purchased this mirror from 4WD Hardware for my '74 and I don't think it's correct.
    http://www.4wd.com/shop/productdetail.asp?model=tj&productsku=977680

The mounting plate is larger than the top of my windshield and I just don't see how it's supposed to work. 4WDH says it'll fit a 41-75. Is this correct? How is my rearview supposed to be mounted? Thanks

That's not a stock mirror, the factory one mounts at the top of the windshield frame with a separate mounting plate. The one you bought is a universal type that may or may not fit.

My 75 has a mirror that glues to the windshield, I doubt it's stock, but it works very well. Your 74 should have holes in the windshield frame for the screws to mount to, but I doubt that the universal one you bought will match up. Just use a little engineering, or send it back and get the glass mount one. Loren

My CJ has two footman loops where it appears the rearview would go. I'm not really sure what they're there for since the top would use the channel on the front of the windshield. I thought that the 4WDH unit would use these holes somehow but I don't think that there is any way it will work because of the design of the mounting bracket.

So does anybody have a mirror that will work or know where I can get one? I would prefer a bolt on style as opposed to the glue on ones

By the way - I have a 4WDH rearview mirror for sale if anyone is interested. Fits a 41-75 CJ ;)

I've got a '74 with the same mirror. The footman loop is centered on the windshield and my mirror is to the right of that, so the mirror is off-centered a little bit. It's difficult to notice, though.

Maybe I can make that one work. It just seems like it would be hard to get the mirror to fit properly on the windshield frame. I guess I need to go out and try to line it up and see if I can get it to work for me. I'm worried that it might be too close to the edges of the frame and I might not get it to hold properly. Guess I'll find out when I try it :) Thanks

that footman and strap are used to strap down the windshield to the hood when its folded down. ;)
just out of curiousity, how mny of you guys have the latch on the windshield to hold the hood when you lift the hood and let it lean on the windshield?

I have a rear view mirror from a Commando, it has a bracket that matches the profile of the top of the windshield frame. Do a search you might find the thread. A stock one (for some years at least) is similar to mine but it mounts to the frame using the same bolts that hold the "hood hold up bracket" to the w/s, but on the inside of course. I believe it was Alan that posted a pic of that for me. I like mine but if rust ever gets hold of it, it would be hard to replace because the mirror arm is a part of the mirror, and it has a J bend to it that makes it unique. I will try to get a pic tomorrow.
One other thing about mine it mounts to the windshield frame right where a footman loop would be for securing the w/s down (it uses a special cast mount). Mine did not have a footman loop, it had a hardtop at one time, maybe that is why? I know that on later CJs they did not have the footman loop/holddown strap if they had a hard top.

I have the latch you are talking about on my 65 Tuxedo Park. I don't see them very often.

You can catch one from time to time on ebay, serach for windshield and m38a1. For some reason they turn up more often in reference to m38a1s then CJ5s, in my experience anyway.

When I say later Cj I generally mean 76-86. 55-71 being early and 72-75 intermediate. As for the hardtop, I wouldn't exactly say there were "stock" but they were dealer options (made by other companies than Jeep), someone correct me if I am wrong. The fiberglass CJ-7 tops were the first true "made by Jeep at the factory" hardtop *I think*.

A '73 could have either a factory installed hard top or a dealer installed hard top. Both installations are the same AFAIK except for the windshield latches. Most were delivered to the dealer without a top, and the dealer installed a soft top, or half or full hard top.

Here is a shot of the commando mirror in my Jeep. Note the cast mount that matches the profile of the windshield frame.

I have two footman loops on the bottom side of the windshield frame. They face towards the floor and are positioned in the center of the windshield about 1/2" apart. My windshield is the correct intermediate windshield, I think, but from the other pictures posted it seems no one else has these footman loops. The positioning of the loops makes it impossible for the mirror posted by Greg to work. Anybody know what these are for?

Steve, I have a footman next to my mirror at an angle (as can be seen in the pic). Also I have 2 more mounted just as you describe, but they are not so close in the middle, more like one each next to the wiper motors, facing down like you describe. All three are factory welded on. The one in the center, if it is for the hood holddown, sure it at an awkward angle. The others I assume somehow work for the factory softtop. Anyone??
Steve are yours factory welded on?
