Hi all. I have always been a fan of jeeps but never had the pleasure of owning a cj. I did have a cherokee at one time. But anyway to the point. I found a 71 CJ5 with a four cylinder. It has a three speed trans and some small lever between the seats. It only travels forward and backwards. I think it may be an overdrive unit but not sure. Look forward to coming up with some more indepth questions to get advice but I just brouhgt it home yesturday and havent gotten to do anything yet.

    Thanks

Does it have one of these on the back of the transfer case?

yes it doesnt look nearly as clean but i thought it was weird that it had a flange on it for a driveshaft. Like I said though I was wondering what the lever was as well. If it is an overdrive unit how do you engage it when you driving. I have never used one.

That one is clean because it only has about 1000 miles on it.;)
Push in the clutch and shift it like a transmission.

If it has a flange on it for a drive shaft it most likely is a rear drive PTO (power take off unit) used to drive accessories. Especially if the shifter is between the seats. Typically overdrive units have the shifter bolted to the transmission shifter cover and the lever would be up in the area between the transmission shifter and transfer case shift lever(s). If you can post up a pic we could tell you for sure. Host pics on flickr or photobucket and link them here.

another quick question is what is the lever that comes from the parking brake (i think that is what it is on the back of the transfer case) mine has a cable instead of a rod.

The parking brake is on the rear output of the transfer case and does have a lever and cable to activate it. It should go up to an engagement handle mounted under the driver's side of the dash unless it has been changed out. Pull out the handle and it engages the park brake. Twist the handle and push back in and it releases it.

dang was hoping it would be a overdrive. So what kind of options do I have to run on this. I have seen pto winches for things like chevys and fords but is there one for a pto drive like this?

JMO - sell it on eBay and put an overdrive there. Run an electric winch if you want a winch.

PTO winches are available, but I don't think there's any source for a new PTO winch for this application. Plus you haven't got much of the whole setup. The PTO winches have their good points, but I think it's not worthwhile to seek out the rest of the stuff you need given what you have.

If you do decide to ditch the PTO, be sure you get the proper output gear for the transfer case and cover plate and gasket. Otherwise you won't be driving it till you do.

Looks like a Spicer 18H pto unit. Going rate is $50-$125 in used shape.

You won't need to change the transfer case INPUT gear if you remove the pto unit. You will only need a cover and the 5 bolts and lock washers to hold it in place. PTO units for an 18 actually run off the transfer case input gear.
