Recently purchased a 66 CJ5 and have been working out the bugs over the last couple of months. One that has me completely stumped is the brake lights. They only turn on when the pedal is pushed as far as it will go toward the floor (which is hardly ever). First thing I did was replace the brake light switch. Same result. I bled the brakes, same result. I checked for leaks, all good, same result. I can't get the darn things to turn on under normal braking. What am I missing? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Do the brakes function properly?

Am I assuming correctly that you have the pressure type switch?

You have done all the same stuff I would do. I would suggest bleeding the brakes again and put a multi-meter on the switch to see when it actually registers that the brakes are pressed.

    good luck

Are you using the original single reservoir master-cylinder that has the stop light switch that screws into the end of the master? If so there is a possibility you have a slight bit of air trapped there which would not effect the braking system. Unscrew the brake switch while someone has pressure applied to the peddle and evacuate the air just like you would bleed the brakes.
