I recently picked up a drive train from what I believe is a 1976 CJ5. My engine number is 908E24. Did I decode the engine number correctly? 232ci manufactured August 24 1976. I thought Jeep had stopped offering the 232 in the CJ in 1976.

Sounds like a 232 to me. I believe it remained the standard engine up through 79.

    this is from novak.

"In 1975, the 232's displacement was increased to 258 c.i.d., and they were built and sold side-by-side with the 232 being the base engine and the 258 being the upgrade. In 1976, the 258 became the base option and the 232 was discontinued."

Certainly the 232 was still the base engine for the CJ in 1976 and 1977, and I think 1978 too. It did go away some time in the 1978-1979 time frame though.

908E24 is indeed August 24, 1976 - very likely for delivery in a 1977 model.

Sorry, but Novak is wrong. That makes it sound like the 258 was created in 1975, which is false. It was first made available in 1971 in J-trucks and Wagoneers and 1972 in CJ's. The 232 and 258 were sold side-by-side in the CJ from 72 through 79, with the 232 as the base and the 258 and 304 as options.

Yes, the Novak blurb is wrong. I don't know where they got the 1975 reference.

The 258 was introduced in mid-1970, along with the updated 232. I believe the 258s went into the J-trucks and Wagoneer as soon as they were available, replacing the earlier design 232 (the 'Rambler' 232). The CJ didn't get an inline 6 until 1972, when the CJ chassis was changed to accommodate the longer engines.

No need to append your question to an old thread - feel free to start a new thread :)

It goes year (1 digit), month (2 digits), engine type (1 letter), day (2 digits).

    So 9 is 1976. Therefore 2 is 1979.
    07 is July.
    C is a 2V 258 cid engine.
    09 is the 9th day.

The other number is probably the PN of the casting - not really meaningful (3235444 is a typical Jeep PN for this era).
