After I got the brakes working on the 77 cj5 I decided to test drive it. It wouldn't start :^(
I traced it down to no spark and discovered that P.O. had replaced the original electronic ign to one using delco type points and condenser. The jeep electronic ignition module is still mounted on the firewall but is evidently not wired in as someone has cut into the harness and run a resistor wire to a Ford duraspark coil complete with the ford coil connector.
I reomoved all that and bought an earlier model coil and changed the wiring ends to match and it runs well. Sometime in the future I will investigate to see if the complete enging has been changed or if someone just didn't like electronic ignition.
Also dropped the fuel tank and replaced the rubber fuel lines coming off the tank. Nuthin but fun and games around here.:D

I think I've finally turned the corner on mine and I've been putting more together that I've been taking apart.

The Prestolite ignition that Jueep used from '75 to '77 is notoriously unreliable. No great loss that it's gone.

I'm running a '78 Duraspark distributor in my CJ-6, using a GM HEI module mounted in the original Prestolite module location. Works well.

    Tim...
Is it my imagination, or is your fan on backward?

Could be ... that's the way it came to me. It's not the original fan.

Looks right to me. Engine rotates clockwise as you're facing it, meaning the fan is setup to pull air through the radiator, which is what it's supposed to do.

Well the fan blades on mine are in the opposite direction than Tim's and it forces air back over the engine just fine as it is supposed to do so something is not right there.

My vote, for what it's worth, is that the fan is backwards. Mine is the reverse of the one in the picture. It would still bring the air in mounted that way, but I think the blade curvature being reversed from what is shown, would be more efficient.

Yes, upon further scrutiny I do agree that it's on backward. The pitch of the blades won't change, it will still pull air through the radiator, but it does appear to be on backward.

It will still draw air but the airfoil shape of the blade is way more efficient facing forward.

Flip it around and it will be quieter and draw less HP when locked up

It's backward someone turned it around,so they have more clearance between the blade and distributor and belt.

Agree, if clearance is needed, there are fan spacers available.

Only they can cause clearance issues at the radiator.

Yep, the fan is mounted backward on the fan clutch which puts it closer to the radiator and away from the belt. Spacer will probably be needed but another question is...where is your fan shroud?

I have a shroud, in storage. These fan blades are too large in diameter for the factory shroud.
