So I have a project that has pretty much been in the same state for the past 5yrs or longer. Its a 1948 CJ2A. I had good intentiones, like everybody, started to work, and then got distracted with life.

The body is beat up, the springs sag, the tranny dosent shift, it has the orginal dana 41 and 25 with 5.38 gears, the engine was swapped out before I got it to a pontiac Slant 4 and it didnt run so I threw in a chevy 4.3L CMPI, which hasnt run since i pulled it out of the doner car 3yrs ago... the list goes on. Its the typical project and I know what I want, just not how to get there.

So what I am looking for is a Build Scedule of some sort from you all who have done this before. I start thinking about it and keep comming full circle chasing my tail.

How do you prioritize things, what comes first? the wiring so I can run the motor to keep it going, or should the body come first before I wire it all up? Brakes, or not untill its ready to drive? What about the shifters for my TH350, do I buy those before I fix the floors? What about the rear fule tank mod I want to do? Should I get my new wrangler suspension before i start body work? Tires to see how it all fits together? you get the idea...

    HELP PLEASE!!

I've done all the mechanical stuff first.Motor, axls, tranny, brakes, until I had a rolling chassis again.I then wired the motor temporary to start it.
While we're busy with the bodywork, I run it on jack stands every now and then just to keep everything turning and lubed while waiting on the bodywork.

BUT....this is my first rebuild project, so many lessons to learn still!

The biggest lesson I've learned is to take my time, and do one thing at a time and finnish it first before starting on the next part, axl or.....

It depends how far you want to break it down. I did not really have a list or anything but i just tore it down to nothing and built up. So down to frame i the frame painted and clean to put the springs on, need springs painted and ready to go to put the axle on, i need new bearings, brake slave cylinders to put the axle on, i just kept going like that till it's done. One part at a time it's when you start doing 8 things at once when it gets confusing and seems like you will never get done.

Decide on a direction for the build – if it’s running – do a section at a time so you can ‘play with it’ between build sections. If it’s a major build where you are going to the frame either because you want to, or have to Gather all the parts first.

As an example – we did a complete build frame up in 4 weeks – 6 to the point where he drove it a lot. We lost one week to weather, one week to me being gone for work, and worked on it in the evenings and weekends.

    1. Frame – get it cleaned up and painted with the mounting points you need for your running gear and as much of the steering as you can see.
    2. Suspension and axles – includes brakes
    3. Motor
    4. Tranny, Tcase
    5. Body – finish steering, pedals, cage. Don’t be afraid to set the body on to make sure everything clears as you build, but be sure to plan to take it off and on at least 3 times fitting and then finishing things.
    6. Paint
    7. Finish Cage, Seat mounts etc
    8. Wiring the rig
    9. Bumpers and such.
You can go back at points and do little things, but make sure the big stuff is done and all the answers are figured out before moving to the next step.

    1. Break it all down
    2. Frame
    3. Make it roll, Springs, Suspension, Axles, Breaks, etc...
    4. Engine, Tranny, TFer case.
    5. Body, which can be done while the others are being worked on.
    6. Wiring
    7. All the other crap, windshield, wipers, guages, etc..
    8. Throwing it into 4 low and going up crap a new jeep cant!
