My F-head burns oil at a rate of at least a quart and half every gas tank. Runs great and I can run it at 50 mph no problem. It needs rings bad. Should I rebuild this motor or should I hold out for a V6? I might have a lead on a parts Jeep with a V6 in it. What would you guys do?

Rebuild it. If you are happy with the motor why go through the challenge of a motor swap.

I'd do an old-fashioned overhaul. Rings, valve job, rod bearings.

yeah that's what I figured I'd do. The PO ran it for a while with the air cleaner off, so I figure the rings are shot from dust and whatnot. It really runs well (15 psi oil pressure at idle, 40 when running), usually starts on the first crank. I consistently get around 18-19 MPG. No knocks or anything. The oil's always black which leads me to think of a lot of blow by. The only reason I'd want a V6 is for the nostalgia of some odd fire Jeep muscle and the ability to keep up with modern traffic. But I think maybe a quick overhaul is the cheaper and easier than an engine swap.

If you're looking for nostalgia an Fhead doesn't get anymore nostalgic. Especially for a '59.
