ever been done? My factory hinge is cracked and weak, plus I like the ability to pull the hood all the way off... Maybe I'm just sick and twisted....

I've seen it done. You'll need to put a support under the cowl to keep it from flexing and cracking. Early CJ's had a bolt in support on the driver's side and a spot welded in one on the passenger side iirc. I know the shape of the cowl where the hinges bolt on helped strengthen that area as well.

I just did this to the Jalopy. The piano hinge was all cracked and barley together. Thanks for the idea!

I really like the idea of of ECJ5 hinges on a flatty, but I agree with Nickmil. I'd cut a 1/4" plate to go on the underside of the cowl. You could even drill and tap the plates then tack weld them on. That way you wouldn't need to mess with nuts when installing them.
