Yes, I searched Technical and used the search function but couldn't find what I was looking for.
1970 CJ-5, Dauntless 225 V-6. Has a Fram PH-11 filter on there now just to flush the engine out. the filter diameter is too large and interfering with the lower radiator hose. The hose will fit but rides on the filter. I want to put a smaller diameter filter on. Anyone have a # that will work for a smaller filter?
My parts person shows two filters for the 225 in a CJ. IIRC it was '67 or '68 and earlier then '71-'69 or '68. I thought they all used the same and the filters listed are a different thread diameter and pitch. I tried the earlier one listed as it was smaller and it definitely won't fit the oil filter adapter/pump cover.
So, to sum up, I need a smaller diameter filter for the later ('70) 225 that currently has a Fram PH-11 filter.
Anyone have a part #? I'd like a Purolator or something similar if possible. Thanks. Nickmil

Reckon the even fire 231 has the same threads? I betcha.

    Fram PH 3387A

Yeah, Fram. You can use the # to cross reference..

This is what's on the 231 in the garage...

    other applications to try
    1980 151 Pontiac puke ( I mean Duke)
also Jeep 258s used a smaller diameter filter
V6 was same large diameter as AMC V8s
as long as the threads are the same
    (and the above should be)

That lower radiator hose is not listed at most FLAPS. If you end up with the typical replacement, it has to be trimmed. The oil filter was the main consideration in how much got trimmed from the lower end of my hose.
Have you considered trimming the hose so the standard filter will work?

    Patrick,
I found that the 3387A that fits a '76 OF 231 won't thread on to my '70 225. I used a Fram PH25 for a shorter filter that does not interfere too much with the lower radiator hose.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, thanks. There just isn't much room with the angle of the filter and the lower spout on the radiator so it rubs. If I trim it any more it won't reach. I don't want it to rub.

Thanks guys. Gives me some options to try. I'll pick some up and report back as to what fits.

Ok, here's where I'm at now. Picked up the PH 25 and found it's shorter but the same diameter. I need one with a smaller diameter. Still on the hunt. Place I went to today didn't have the others or any of the cross referenced ones in stock so will still look. I was able to shorten the hose so it doesn't rub "as bad" but is really stretched out and could see with frame flex it pulling off or pulling on the radiator real hard, not good since I just spent $300 getting the radiator rebuilt with a new core and other repairs done.

Still on the hunt. Will keep you guys in the loop.

I found years ago a smaller diameter filter for the 231 in my '59 but I know it won't work as it has metric threads (1980 231). That's what I'm hoping to find for the 225.

When I bought the 225 timing cover from you, you sent a bunch of chrome filters. part no is Z-240, brand is acdelco. still have some if you need measurements or one of them

Hey man, no need to be sorry! You were trying to do a nice thing and it's very much appreciated:beer:

I know there's got to be a smaller diameter filter out there. I WILL find it if there is. It took me a while to do the same for my 231 but I did find one.

IIRC the original filter was the same diameter, but shorter than anything currently available. On my 70, the hose rubs on the filter, too, so I cut a piece of the old radiator hose and sleeved it over the new to protect it. It's held in place with a couple of zip ties.

You may want to consider going to one of the quick lube joints, those people are masters in cross referencing filters. They would likely be able to help you in finding a smaller diameter filter.

the Wix website shows specs on the filters. 75 Buick 231 oil filter is 2.9" dia. and still has SAE threads next year went metric threads. Gasket is slightly different dimensions but may still mate with the filter mount without leaking. Just an option. Oh yes WIX 51042 AC Delco PF46F

Thanks for the additional info guys. I found one! Carquest #85522
I haven't cross referenced it yet to the other #'s but seems to fit fine. It's long and skinny and should give me the extra room I needed.
Gotta get a new lower radiator hose now as I cut the old one too short trying to get it to clear the larger filter.

I could be wrong guys, but aren't there other things on oil filters other then just the size that you have to worry about, like pressure drop, relief valve setting, etc. I did not think you could just throw any filter on just because it fit the spot but like I said, I could be wrong. ;)

    That's a 51522 Wix. Fits 81-86 CJ with a 258.
